I have mixed feelings on the US national tour of Hadestown (mainly blocking changes that I think have a detriment on the story, but also some blocking changes that were really interesting and some mild disconnection in the vocals) but as someone who loves an angry Persephone, I've never considered how different a sadder Persphone actually makes the interpretation...
And I do love how young Rudy Foster's Hermes feels. He feels closer in age in his action and movement to Orpheus, which makes the timeloop aspect so much sadder.
Rudy Foster's Hermes and Namisa Mdlalose Bizana's Persphone were really fun in Our Lady of the Underground. It really felt like they were drinking together prior to the scene and were just giggling to one another and messing around (she also kissed his cheek).
The fates were... interesting. While I love a menacing interpretation of the fates, these three felt more actively agressive. Though I do miss the blocking of the fates trapping Hades during "his kiss the riot" because they really would have done that really well, I'm sad it never happened.
I think my main gripe with it as a story was certain movements and blocking, but I think I especially felt it during Chant II. This has nothing to do with the acting and everything to do with the lack of the turntable. One of my favorite pieces of blocking on the West End was the tension between Hades and Persephone. When Hades stepped onto the turntable to circle Orpheus, Persephone stepped on and stayed next to Orpheus as a sign that she was done accepting everything her husband did and was now going to fight for the boy. With the lack of a turntable, Chant II became incredibly awkward in it's movement, and Persephone didn't ever have that moment of defiance and it ended up just looking like she was chasing her husband before he did something irredeemable. This had absolute nothing to do with the actors and everything to do with the missing aspects of the show. The thing that I also really didn't like was how the blocking separated Nikolaus Colón and Namisa Mdlalose Bizana throughout moments where it was so weird for them to be. Hades leaves her side during "Way Down Hadestown" which, for someone who is meant to show that he'll always look back to make sure Persephone is there, he just walks away from his wife and moves down to the main part of the stage from where Persephone is standing at the entrance to the Underworld. The second was during How Long. While seperation is good to show the visual divide, they always start them in odd spots on stage where getting to a point of tension takes a lot longer in a song that is fairly short. I think that parts of the seperation were interesting during Chant, but again, it takes them way too long to even move close to one another to show that aching for one another during Chant. Now, the one blocking change I did find fun was Namisa Mdlalose Bizana's Persephone slamming the door in Nikolaus Colón's Hades's face at the end of Chant.
RETELLING OF GREEK MYTHS ARE SO BAD
look, i love a good retelling any day (see my Greek mythology section on my book shelf) but they're getting out of hand. not necessarily in quantity but in quality. (Lore Olympus, Kaos, blood of Zeus tec.) good shows, but absolutely horrendous is regards to their characterizations.
