The faeries (Hadestown) have stolen me (invaded my brain) and I dont want to be saved.
Thinking about Hermes and The Fates and the sad song and singing it again..... but words dont work properly yet.
Eurydice & the fates
Jordan Tyson as Eurydice Jewelle Blackman, Fay Trinidad & Jessie Shelton as the fates
the fates in hadestown aren't so much characters as an embodiment of historical materialism. From 'any way the wind blows' onward, they represent the conditions of eurydice's poverty, following her everywhere she goes. In 'a gathering storm', they are the environmental conditions caused by hades' (and, metaphorically, the capitalist's) industry. In 'when the chips are down' the fates are there to make it clear that eurydice's leaving isn't a result of unfaithfulness but of the exact same conditions that have always followed her - her circumstances, created by hades remove what choice she has.
in 'nothing changes', this reaches it's crescendo, as the fates/the conditions of the world try and force apathy onto orpheus. why struggle when the wall is so high, and when you cross it there's nothing but pain. But then, orpheus sings 'If it's true', and the workers hear him. He develops enough revolutionary power to turn the conditions back on hades in 'word to the wise', though even then, the power of the bourgeoisie is such that they give him advice. The world is not fated to be one way or another, but can be changed in the changing of conditions, in taking action. but in the end orpheus doesn't have wat it takes. in 'doubt comes in', the fates are individualism, doubt, the trials and burnout of moving forward not knowing you're going to suceed, and orpheus finally succumbs.
Chessy would get along really well with the Fates from Hadestown to me. They could all bond over giving a voice to doubts and negative thoughts.
