Not 100% sure I want to post this, but...
Do I like the Warboys more than I like the Vuvalini? No. I like them both.
It's just that the Vuvalini are what I hope to be someday. They are inspirational and aspirational. They aren't what I am now, but what I hope to be: calm, brave, self-possessed, strong alone or in community, supporting one another, defending other women, keepers of memory but not mired in nostalgia, wise, clever, mysterious without being mystifying. They’re like wasteland saints.
They are what I want to be when I grow up.
The Warboys make me remember what it was like to be a kid and a teenager, to go rampaging around with a pack of friends, to scuffle and argue and fight, to dare each other to do dangerous things, to show off, to prove that you were the best and the fastest and the strongest and the bravest, to go fast--so fast, faster than anyone has gone before, just screaming down that hill. That's all still in me. That's still who I am.
I know I'm not "supposed" to like the Warboys--toxic masculinity and white male power and violence and oppression and withholding of resources and deathcults and war and everything else they represent. They’re the villains, after all. I understand that. And I won't argue the symbolism or narrative significance therein for a second.
But right now in my life, I'm balanced between these two points (which are different but not wholly dissimilar). And I'm aspiring towards one, but still close to the other.
It's not that I like one set of characters more than the other.
It's that in one I see what I hope to be someday. And in the other I see myself.
