I’m glad my friends included me in their theoretical hunter/gatherer society

I don't think hunting and gathering were separate occupations.
This is pure speculation, but hear me out: humans are persistence predators, which means we basically jog/walk/run/walk/jog after animals who just fall down dead after a while because they can sprint but don't have the endurance to go long distances. Slowly meandering after animals is a great opportunity to check out what plants are around your feet and pick a few. That exhausted antelope won't get too far while you dig up a tuber or two.
If you do it like this, by the time your main course is ready to cook you've also got your sides ready to prep. Plus, you won't go hungry or come home empty-handed even if the hunt is unsuccessful.
