نبات
Last weekend, I went to Safa Persian Teahouse in Manayunk with my friend Sara. She and I are both half-Persian. I ordered the rose tea and Sara ordered the Persian tea. When the cashier brought out our teas, he asked if we wanted any sugar. Thinking he meant نبات, I nodded. Much to my dismay, he brought out a bag of regular cane sugar. I asked if he had any of the rock candy, and he immediately responded by asking us if we were Persian. The second we said yes, his behavior and language completely changed. I think he had a preconception that we were a couple of non-Iranian customers who are just in-the-know about their hip tea shop (which seemed to be the majority of their clientele). It was rather satisfying to prove him wrong (in the nicest possible way).
We ended up having a whole conversation about how his grandfather always keeps one نبات in the side of his cheek while he drinks tea. We connected on this; my family and I also do the same thing. Up until now, I had always thought this was just a quirk of my family. Now having learned that other Iranians share this habit, I feel more culturally connected than I did before. I have learned that when you speak to a man in his language, that goes to his heart. Even more so, it has been so enjoyable to have an instant connection with a pure stranger over a seemingly small cultural habit.
