they have never been normal about each other I fear. this has been going since before the 2025 season even started back when Kimi's English was a lot worse and George (known to be someone who takes a while to warm up to people) was fighting for his life to make it all less awkward. are they gonna be more reasonable this season? who knows! People expect Sam to perform so much emotional labor for Bucky - they expect him to do all of the work when it comes to their relationship (platonic or otherwise), and I just think that’s… interesting. This fandom expects so much from Sam when it comes to well, everything, and almost nothing from Bucky. He always gets a pass, one excuse or another. Not Sam though. Sam’s a nice guy & a good man, and he worked with veterans before, and yada yada yada, so he should always do everything I guess lol. He can be upset with Bucky, or Walker, or anyone really, but only for a limited engagement… Then he has to get over it and he has to do ALL the work to bring them together again, the responsibility to mend fences always seems to fall solely in his lap despite the fact that he didn’t break them in the first place.

The thing is though, Sam is a good guy and he does and would perform a lot of emotional labor for his friends, BUT the amount that people expect from him when it comes to Bucky in particular is suspect and always makes me frown.

Seriously, how much do you expect this man to take - in canon or in fics? How much to you want him to take from someone who is supposed to be his friend, before he takes a giant step back and focuses on himself? I’m just saying, at some point, the amount of disrespect from various characters - in canon and/or in fics - that some people want Sam to receive and overcome without reacting at all, or getting to keep being upset about it for more than a hot minute, is actually unbelievable. No, I’m not saying he would or should throw a tantrum, or fight them, or cuss them out, but why on earth should he be the one doing all the work to keep these relationships alive when he was the one hurt? Why should he be fine with bullshit actions and excuses? Why should the other party in Sam’s relationships be able to continually disrespect him without facing any consequences?

Why do y’all think Sam has no pride or dignity? I mean, that’s what it seems to boil down to, especially when it comes to SamBucky fics.

Hot take, but for all that unhealthy parasocial relationships get talked about, especially in the mcyt sphere, we don't talk enough about how healthy parasocial relationships are things that exist as well???

Healthy parasociality are what allow what happenes when you see someone's work they create & recognizing yourself in it, feeling less alone because it exists, imagining new possibilities you thought off limits for yourself, feeling comforted by what someone said or did or made & released into the world without ever actually talking to them. That's one of the biggest examples I see people having. Like, feeling represented by a creator just making cool shit & presenting part of themself is a parasocial interaction, & I see people talk about these things all the time without acknowledging that.

It can become unhealthy if you start placing expectations or demands on them or hinging your emotional well being on them, 'cause damn, y'all don't truly know that creator & they overwhelmingly most likely don't know you like. exist or whatever, you don't get to treat them like they are actually your friend or have to listen to you.

But just hearing someone existing, hearing someone's life experiences they share, & having a positive emotional reaction to it is like. normal. & healthy. & not bad in & of itself just because you don't actually know each other.

Anyway, this post was actually supposed be about how for me personally, the crux of healthy parasocial relationships is deriving just the most joy out of strangers having enjoyable & fulfilling experiences. I love seeing creators get to hang out irl or having a cool new opportunity to do something exciting or creating something they are proud of, & then just getting hit with so much compersion that makes my dang soul glow from being so happy for them. I love when I see people I will never actually know having good experiences & my brain does the contentedness chemicals because someone else's delight enriches my life without me ever even talking to them.

Like... that's really the good shit right there. Happiness spreading like pollen from a freshly opened flower, posts on the internet knocking into the blooms & spreading secondhand joy around the world.

#me just perpetually delighted by the rather new human experience of being able to follow someone online #& without ever actually interacting with them feel an echo of their joy & pride & accomplishment #just really fucking neat flip side to the far more talked about negative parasocial behavior #it's important to talk the negative/unhealthy stuff so people can try to avoid them to protect both creators & viewers/enjoyers/observers #like unhealthy parasociality is fucked up to do to a creator but also will fuck up your own mind #someone who doesn't know you especially shouldn't have that sway on your life & mental well-being #the boundaries are important for everyone involved #but there are really cool things that also come from the circumstances that have led to that being a thing needing to be discussed #& I think it's so important to acknowledge & appreciate that as well #Humans were never meant to know or witness as much or as many people as we do now #In many ways it creates new problems our brains aren't evolved to wrap around & we have to figure out how to deal with in real time.#In many other ways it's created beautiful new ways to experience humanity.#Important to see both sides in order to not let the pessimism eat you alive.#verdant rambles #eta: also petition to widen & increase usage of the word compression #*Compersion (thanks Apple Autocorrect)#it is the opposite of jealousy & originates from polyamorous circles to describe the joy from seeing the love between a partner & metamour #but honestly I feel so much platonic/parasocial based compersion on the regular #having a specific word for “’I love that (whatever is making someone else happy) for you & your happiness brings me joy’#is just so nice & important imo #follow Vert Verdantglow to hear faem ramble about compersion every time they are happy for someone
