OPENING THURSDAY. âPerle Fine: The Accordment Seriesâ 2/13/20, 6-8pm. Perle Fineâs connection with Minimalism is clear. Kathleen Housley states in her seminal book, âTranquil Power: The Art and Life of Perle Fine:â âClose in age and in temperament, Fine and [Agnes] Martin shared many similarities, one being that their art was routinely described by critics as âatmosphericâ and âclassic.ââ The two artists appeared together in a group show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1962 called âGeometric Abstraction in America.â Perle Fineâs grids are set apart from minimalist tendencies by using colorful lines, planes of color, and sweeping brushstrokes. Housley states: âFineâs unique strength was, and always had been, her use of color.â #perlefine #fine #9thstreet #9thstreetshow #9thstreetwomen #womenofabstractexpressionism #minimalism #colorpainting #asl #hanshofmann #hofstra #hamptonsartist #guildhall #accordment #accordmentseries #chelseagalleries #openingnight #artinstallation #openingreception #thursdaynight #galleryhopping #nycart #womenartists #womenartdealers #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8agUGyFq7B/?igshid=eba0ed2np4vy

Perle Fine (1905-1988) was an artist at forefront of the Abstract Expressionist movement as it unfolded in New York and East Hampton, Long Island. Fine studied with Hans Hofmann and was a friend of Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Franz Kline, and other leading artists of the era. She gained recognition after World War II, when she received a grant from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and showed at both Peggy Guggenheimâs Art of This Century Gallery and the Museum of Nonobjective Painting (now the Guggenheim Museum). Her first solo exhibition was held at Willard Gallery, New York, in 1945. Subsequently she showed at Betty Parsons Gallery and the Tanager Gallery, the first New York artistâs cooperative.
