May 25, 2026 - Black-headed Hemispingus (Pseudospingus verticalis) Found from western Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador into northern Peru, these birds in the tanager family live in and around shrubby mountain forests. They eat insects and berries, foraging in pairs and small groups often with other species in shrubs, trees, and sometimes bamboo. While very little is known about their breeding behavior, an adult in breeding condition and two immature birds were found in September in Colombia.

A couple gorgeous tanagers foraging in the trees! I don't know why, but the tanagers got the closest to me they've gotten yet on this afternoon. It's possibly because foot traffic was lower than usual in this spot, so they were feeling bolder. Either way, several of these birds came very close, singing loudly right in front of me. After so long only seeing cardinals, another vividly red bird feels so foreign, never mind the bright yellow females!
