Trust in All the Wrong Places (A Perfectworldshipping fic for Perfectworldweek)
A few weeks late, but I finally got my entry done for the last day of Perfectworldshipping Week.
“It’s just a meeting. Rose just wants some information on Mega Evolution to compare against Dynamaxing.”
“And to take Kalos’ beloved professor on a date.”
“It’s not a date.”
“But he wants to take you out to lunch with a seaside view.”
A stack of clothes were unceremoniously tossed into a suitcase. As Sycamore closed it, arms wrapped around his shoulders. A light weight landed on his head as Lysandre’s rested on it.
“Of course it is.” Sycamore recalled. “Hulberry’s a seaside city. And according to Rose, the seafood at The Captain’s Table is to die for.” Lysandre grumbled. “You really don’t trust people, do you?”
“I trust people.”
“Name one person you trust.” Sycamore twisted around, pushing back slightly to face Lysandre. “Besides this beloved professor.”
Lysandre paused, as though contemplating the inquiry. “I trust Malva… and Steven Stone.”
“Makes sense. Malva seems like a trustworthy advisor. And you trust another businessman in Steven, so it’s not like you distrust businessmen. Then again, he does seem reliable.”
“He doesn’t have his father’s ego and I admire how he balances his research and championship.”
“Okay. Last I checked, Rose doesn’t have an ego despite being the sole founder of Macro Cosmo. And he seems to care deeply for his region.” Sycamore held Lysandre’s arm. “So what makes him different?”
“I don’t know,” a hand cradled the side of Sycamore’s face, “something feels off about him. Like he’s more interested in you rather than your research.”
Lysandre’s thumb twirled dark strands of hair, contemplating the thought. It may have sounded strange, paranoid even, but it worried him. Something about Rose’s demeanor was suspicious. He seemed too enthusiastic. Too curious. Too invested in other people’s work.
He understood the need to expand and explore resources, and Lysandre could understand how Sycamore’s work could give him some feedback. At the sane time, Lysandre knew that Sycamore was a charming man. Infectiously so. And eith their relationship not quite public yet, Lysandre worried that someone like Rose would want to take him. Romantically, professionally, or both.
A hand held Lysandre’s, pulling him out of his train of thought. “Trust me.”
~
The flight was set to go out at noon. It’d be a two hour flight and his meeting with Rose would be that night. The flight back would be tomorrow morning.
“I’ll call you when I get settled.” Sycamore promised.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to come?”
“I’ll be fine. Besides, I’d hate to inconvenience you by stealing you from your work.”
“It wouldn’t be an inconvenience.”
Sycamore chuckled, picking up his suitcase. “I’ll be okay. I’m a big boy.” As his flight was announced, Sycamore hugged Lysandre. “Got to go.”
Not waiting for a response, Sycamore ran to the departure gate. He only paused to wave back at Lysandre with a lax smile before disappearing. Once everyone was on board, the door was closed and after a few moments, the plane took off.
~
The Captain’s Table. Sycamore arrived a half hour early, wanting to make sure he got there in time. Since landing, he hadn’t heard much from Lysandre outside of him acknowledging that Sycamore had a safe flight. He wasn’t sure if he should worry, but figured Lysandre was busy with clients.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting. I was mingling with some admirers.”
Dawning a hat, shorts, sunglasses, and a white shirt, Rose took the seat across from Sycamore. Sycamore smirked, unbothered. Once Rose was settled, a waitress came to take their orders. Once placed, she went to pit it in.
“You’ll love the food.” Rose assured. “Though that isn’t the only thing that I hope you enjoy while you’re here.”
“Of course, Galar’s a beautiful region. That itself makes the trip worth it.”
“Indeed. If we weren’t meeting on business, I’d give you a full tour.”
“Another time perhaps.” Sycamore’s arms crossed on the table. “Speaking of business, why did you call me out here? Not that I don’t mind traveling, but a video call could have been easier for a Mega Evolution inquiry.”
“I wanted it to feel more… personal. Despite your generally approachable demeanor, you’re quite the reclusive fellow.” A hand landed on Sycamore’s arm. “I wanted to meet you.”
“That’s… reasonable. I can be pretty reserved when I want to be.” Sycamore moved his arm. “So, what would you like to know?”
“I suppose I’d like to start with how it’s different from Dynamaxing.” Rose stated as the food was delivered to their table. “Both capitalize on strengthening Pokémon.”
Sycamore nodded. “Mega Evolution doesn’t require the particles that Dynamaxing does. It’s more like an evolution. One that affects a Pokémon’s abilities more so than a traditional evolution. It’s still a mysterious phenomena, but with enough research, I’m hoping to discover the truth.”
“And where do the Mega Stones come into play?”
“Going back to evolution, my theory is that they act similar to stone evolutions like Arcanine, Roserade, and so on. However, Mega Stones were affected by energy from Xerneas or Yveltal three thousand years ago.”
“Interesting. It sounds similar to Eternatus during the Darkest Day. After its defeat, its energy opened the doors for Dynamaxing.”
“I suppose they do share that similarity.”
“Do you think Mega Evolution and Dynamaxing could be used together?”
“I’m not too familiar with Dynamaxing, but I suppose they could, in theory. Though I wouldn’t recommend it since it may cause a great deal of stress.”
“Oh?”
“Some studies have found that Mega Evolution, despite it being a sign of a strong bond between a Pokémon and its trainer, may cause physical pain. Adding a growing size may worsen it. And I would rather not risk put them through more pain if that’s the case.”
“Fascinating. You really know your stuff.”
“I would hope so. It is my specialty after all.”
“True, but you haven’t been a professor for as long as Samuel Oak or your mentor Rowan. So, you still have time to figure out all of the answers.”
Though it may not have been intended, the observation hit Sycamore’s confidence. While not entirely wrong, Sycamore felt like he was making progress. More than previous professors who studied it.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said it like that.” Rose’s hand held Sycamore’s. “You’re doing a lot of good work. On your own no less. I’m positive that you’ve made progress and will continue to do so.”
Sycamore’s gaze fell. “Yeah…”
“Enough about that.” Rose pulled Sycamore’s hand towards the middle of the table. “I’d like to get to know you more. As a person. Would you like to stay a little longer? I’d love to take you out on a more… casual evening.”
Grey eyes shook, startled. “Oh, no, I couldn’t. As tempting as it is, I’ve got to get back to Kalos.”
As Sycamore tried to pull his hand away, Rose held it in place. Rose’s other hand held Sycamore’s arm.
“I insist. If you’re worried about lodging, I can get you a suite in Wyndon. All expenses paid.”
Sycamore pulled his hand away. “Where is this coming from all of the sudden?”
Rose chuckled. “I’ve done some research on you, professor. An up and coming professor who studied under the esteemed Professor Rowan. Charming, if a little awkward, and alluring.” He leaned in closer. “I can offer you stability, resources, and love. All you have to do is promise yourself to me.”
Sycamore stood up, keeping a faux smile as a chill ran down his spine. “As tempting as that is, I… I’ve got to go.”
Before he could walk away, Sycamore’s arm was grabbed. He was yanked forward, a warm sensation landing on his mouth. A hand held the back of his head, holding him there.
A strained breath escaped Sycamore as he squirmed around. He managed to push away from the kiss, but the grip Rose had on him remained as he was yanked closer to Rose.
“Don’t be shy,” Rose kissed Sycamore’s forehead, “an opportunity like this doesn’t come every day.”
A hand moved to the bottom of Sycamore’s chin. He wanted to yell. Scream at Rose for the nonconsensual advance. But before he could get it out, Sycamore was yanked back. The scent of coffee and cinnamon graced Sycamore’s senses as he was shoved behind someone.
“Lysand-”
“Is this how you treat all of your guests? Or just the pure hearted ones?”
“You know,” Rose mused, “it’s quite rude to interrupt a conversation.”
“And it’s down right criminal to assault an unwilling professor.”
“Assault? Please. Not that it’s any of your business, but we’re sealing a deal.”
Lysandre’s fists clenched. “As my partner, Augustine is my business, you pompous, entitled bastard.”
As his fist flew forward, his arm would swiftly be yanked back. Turning his attention away from Rose, Lysandre was greeted by scared, silver eyes. Sycamore whole body shaking.
“Take me home.” Sycamore clenched Lysandre’s arm tighter. “Please.”
Lysandre’s expression softened, focusing on Sycamore’s distress. As much as he wanted to lash out further, Sycamore took priority. So if he wanted to leave, then Lysandre was ready to follow suit.
“Okay.” Lysandre sighed, prying his arm from Sycamore’s grip so he could hold hid hand. He then glared at Rose. “You aught to thank Augustine. If it were up to me, you wouldn't make it out of here in one piece.”
~
“You probably want to tell me, ‘I told you so’, don’t you?”
Reading a book in bed, Lysandre waited for the professor to join him. He paid no mind to Sycamore pacing around the room as Lysandre waited.
“No, I don’t.”
“But you were right.”
“And you were taken advantage of.” Lysandre turned a page. “It would be insensitive of me to berate a victim because of my suspicions.”
“But you were right and I probably deserve it for being so stupid.”
Lysandre closed his book and set it on the nightstand. “You didn’t deserve that. What you do deserve is comfort and understanding. And nowhere in that includes further traumatizing yourself because you think you deserved this.”
“But…”
The blankets were tossed down, opening a spot for Sycamore. A squeak escaped the professor, not finding the words to argue as Lysandre lightly tapped the spot next to him. It was a tempting offer, and Sycamore knew his body was tired beneath his swirling emotions.
Sycamore sighed, flopped on the bed. He cuddled up to Lysandre as the comforter was draped over him. Lysandre turned the light off.
“Do you still trust me?” Sycamore inquired, hiding his face in Lysandre’s chest.
“Of course.” Lysandre ran a hand through his hair. “If I recall correctly, a wise professor once asked if I trusted anyone besides him… and I suppose I do have a hard time trusting many people besides him.” His hand rested on Sycamore’s back. “You didn’t enter that situation willingly and I worry that people will abuse your kindness.” His hand did a gentle circling motion on Sycamore’s back. “I want to keep you safe in this cruel world.”
Sycamore shuffled around slightly. “And I thank you for it.” Leaning over, he kissed Lysandre’s cheek. “And between you, me, and the fence post, he’s a horrible kisser.”
Lysandre snickered. “I’ll be sure to add that to your biography.”
Sycamore snickered. “Don’t you dare.”
Rolling over, Lysandre got on top of Sycamore and kissed him. “I love you.”
