The Relationship - Horse Racing

For my final relationship shoot I decided to photograph the horse racing at Southwell Racecourse in Nottinghamshire. One of the main things to consider with these images was the shutter speed I used in order to freeze the subject of the image. It became apparent that I would have to raise the ISO in order to compensate for the cloud coverage that limited some of the light. 

My favourite image from this shoot is featured above (bottom left). I like this image because it is of the stablehand and the horse instead of the jockey and the horse. It is not a typical sports image because it is focusing on a relationship that happens away from the track. Furthermore, the horse and stablehand in the image are both sharp and in focus and I really like the level of detail that can be seen in the horse itself. 

Plymouth One Day Shoot Recap

During my time in Plymouth, I visited the Summerskills Microbrewery and documented their operation producing cask ales for pubs and restaurants all over Cornwall and Devon. When I arrived at the microbrewery I was unsure what to expect as I hadn’t seen the location beforehand. It was a reasonably small operation with a large amount of machinery and equipment in a small area but this did not have an impact on what I was there to do. 

One of the main things I liked about the brewery was the small ‘family business’ atmosphere about the place. It was clear that the operation was small with only and handful of employees and it was nice to see that in the form of small memorabilia and awards on the walls. 

My favourite image from this is brief the image above. I like this image because it is informative in the sense that it clearly shows a part of the ale making process but then also has an element of humour. I also like the composition of this image with the employee standing off to the right and the left side of the image is still filled, in the case the casks and the light pouring in through the door. 

The Relationship - Falmouth Half Marathon

This shoot was not meant to be for The Relationship however I decided to use it for this instead of the five picture story because I was not happy with the images I captured as they did not represent the marathon as a whole and lacked variety so I chose to use one image for this brief instead. 

The Relationship - Rugby

For this shoot, I went to Truro rugby club to photograph their game versus Cullompton. I went to this shoot wanting to get an action shot of the players and the team effort that was involved in the sport, however, I preferred some of the other less stereotypical sports shots such as the one featured above. 

One challenge that I faced during this shoot was dealing with harsh shadows due to the weather being very bright. This helped in some ways because it forced me to shoot with very fast shutter speeds freezing players in the images but it also created shadows that had to be adjusted in Lightroom afterwards. 

The Relationship - Cheerleading 

This shoot with FXU Fusion, the Falmouth and Exeter joint cheerleading team, was completed as part of my project looking at different sporting relationships that are present in a variety of sports ranging from rugby to cheerleading, to marathon running. Overall I am happy with the outcome of the shoot and I am confident I have a photo that will be part of my final set of images. Going into the shoot I was unsure of what to expect, but I had an idea of the sort of images I wanted to get. The first challenge was the lighting in the Sports Hall as it was very bright, however, through the camera, it was more challenging. After attempting to use flash and not succeeding due to the lighting conditions in the sports hall, I decided to increase the ISO and accept that the photos would be grainier than I would have perhaps liked.

London Week - One Day Shoot - Post Shoot Thoughts 

After a busy week in London, I feel like I should reflect on the one day shoot (ODS) and how I think it went. For my ODS, the plan was to visit the Supreme store in Soho, London and document the clothing release that brings people from all over the country and the world to queue up for hours for expensive, sought after clothing. A Supreme drop is a chance for people to wear their best, most expensive or rare clothing, as well as a place for photographers to photograph the latest streetwear fashion and trends. 

Going into this shoot, I planned on going to a secret location revealed on the Monday before a clothing drop to photograph the sign up process that guarantees you a position in the queue, however I then decided that this was not necessary as I wanted to get more street fashion portraits as opposed to general shots documenting the process. I arrived at the store on Thursday and it was as expected, a lot of people queueing for hours, this however made me slightly wary of asking people for portraits, something that I am determined to overcome as soon as possible. Ironically, the only person I asked for a portrait was arguably the most well know person there, Blondey McCoy, a model and skater for the nearby Palace Skateboards store. 

London Week – Shoot Plans

 -       For London week, I wanted to focus on fashion, specifically streetwear in London. To do this I am going to go to Supreme, a popular streetwear brand and photograph the diversity that exists in streetwear clothing. Due to the nature of Supreme in-store releases, to capture the full process and experience I will go to a secret location announced on Monday where buyers will register and get a ticket they must take to the store on Thursday morning. I will then go to the store on Thursday and document the queues, clothes and hype that surrounds a Supreme Drop.

Sophie Gerrard - Drawn To The Land 

For the 5 picture story I was thinking about focussing on women in the farming industry. Growing up on a farm I have always been surrounded by female farmers, farming has never been an exclusively male career however for some reason male farmers dominate the media.
