and yeah i… have a lot of questions about that! ubw, taken individually, outside of the larger context of f/sn and the other two routes, leaves a lot threads hanging and lots unsolved stuff and unanswered questions, and the sakura-rin relationship is a going to be a huge one if they adapt the route as accurately as they can. like, the prologue in itself already raises a few questions about what their relationship for a first-time viewer, and there aren’t going to be answered in ubw. but even if they tried, you really can’t get into sakura’s storyline without getting totally sidetracked from ubw and there’s no way to squeeze it in (i never watched the deen fate anime, but i’ve heard that they tried? but yeah even if you are a good studio with a good writer it’s…. going to be really difficult to make it work sakura’s character arc takes a whole route for a reason man)

on the other hand looking back it does seem like they’ve actually tried to avoid from calling to much attention to the rin-sakura relationship— the prologue had a bit more thorough conversations between them two which hint a bit at what’s going on and that they’re not just a junior and a senior, and rin’s internal monologue also hinted at it iirc?? and it makes sense for them to cut most of it because this is sadly not a route in which sakura has much relevance ;-; but this way the big question mark about sakura won’t be quite as big when the series ends for people who aren’t familiar with the rest of the series and you could make sakura come off as just a background character this way. 

thing is i definitely think they want this anime to be able to stand on its own to some degree, not just so people who know the vn and who watched fate/zero and who know nothing about it will all be able to watch it, but because it just seems standard procedure when you’re making any work of fiction?? they could of course rely on other fate/installments to explain the the audience but leaning on them too much seems like a fairly poor choice of… well, everything. idk i don’t think making anime quite works that way

both of them are pretty scarce in the first half of the manga, but after this current arc the anime’s on finishes they get more screentime and a lot of development, both as individual characters and as a couple!
