Not rude at all! It's not a very common term outside of Japanese concerts (and maybe Korea?) so it's not surprising you haven't heard the term before. People also call them by different names (cyalumes, light sticks etc) which adds to the confusion.

Basically, they're like really big, really bright glow sticks, but electronic and fancy. You move them to the beat of the song, there's a few patterns of movement that seem common, but if you use intuition and have good knowledge of the song, you'll find everyone in the arena is doing the same movements. It's really cool.

They can glow in many different colours, generally matching whatever theme color different idols have. Generally you change the color manually yourself depending on who's singing (so for a Masato song you'd change it a blue colour) but recently many Japanese concerts have added the option to sync your penlight to a qr code on your seat number, and they can then take over all the penlights in the arena to create patterns thatove in time to the music. This is super pretty, especially when you have 50,000 peoples penlights to work with.

There are generic penlights like kings blade or lumica (amongst other brands) and ones that are branded specifically for certain themes, franchises or concerts. Utapri releases one with each new concert, but they can be quite expensive and hard ish to get online. The branded ones have more complex designs and often come in more shapes like hearts, spheres, stars etc and will have the name of the concert on them. For reference, Utapri ones often have things like crowns and stars on them.
