The Chinese artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu participate in the Venice Art Biennale this year with two kinetic artworks. Now I’ve just realized that we filmed an artwork of them before, and it’s funny that this happened (almost) exactly 10 years ago in June 2009 at Saatchi Gallery in London. The piece is called Old Persons Home, but the association of senile dictators in a nursing home is, of course, purely coincidental.

My synapses are still crackling thanks. The National Gallery of Australia’s Hyper Real exhibition was more than worth our meandering schlepp up the Hume this week. It’s engrossing, unnerving, unmissable and, almost inexplicable but I’ll give it a crack, natch: artists such as Mueck, Piccinini and others of devious and puzzling aesthetic, twist your concepts of self, body and reality with mostly deviated humanoid artworks. They’re unnervingly familiar, heart breaking, confounding, amazing, and sometimes disgusting. I’d do it again, if only for the room full of elderly electric-wheelchair-bound world leaders (by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu) spinning crazily, soundlessly like bumper cars in a nightmarish fairground sideshow. #hyperrealnga @nationalgalleryaus #canberraart #canberra #piccinini #meuck @patricia.piccinini #sunyuan #pengyu (at National Gallery of Australia, Canberra)
