My synapses are still crackling thanks. The National Gallery of Australia’s Hyper Real exhibition was more than worth our meandering schlepp up the Hume this week. It’s engrossing, unnerving, unmissable and, almost inexplicable but I’ll give it a crack, natch: artists such as Mueck, Piccinini and others of devious and puzzling aesthetic, twist your concepts of self, body and reality with mostly deviated humanoid artworks. They’re unnervingly familiar, heart breaking, confounding, amazing, and sometimes disgusting. I’d do it again, if only for the room full of elderly electric-wheelchair-bound world leaders (by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu) spinning crazily, soundlessly like bumper cars in a nightmarish fairground sideshow. #hyperrealnga @nationalgalleryaus
