Based in Caerphilly county, Parc Penallta is built on the grounds of a former coal tip and promises views across the Caerphilly at its’ highest points. As a mark of reminder of the history of the park, a pit pony called the ‘Sultan’ was created as a sculpture out of the earth, a view that only becomes clear from above but one which is now an incredibly unique signature for Parc Penallta. Also, you only have to look across the road to see the remainder of the old colliery as a reminder of the history in Penallta, although the current day park couldn’t be further from the industrialised colliery that many would remember.

For dogs like Toby, Parc Penallta offers a wonderful open space for dog walkers and also for fishing enthusiasts or even those who like to get outside for a little fresh air. The park offers wide open fields, a path where you can walk or cycle several kilometres through the park and even several different lakes with beautiful country scenes.

Parc Penallta is a great place to go to relax and I’ve found it’s a great way to escape your everyday routine. The park offers bench areas where you can sit and relax after your long walk and it would even be a great place to sit with a picnic on a lovely summer’s day. Halfway through our walk, that’s exactly what me and Toby did, minus the food.

I absolutely love visiting Parc Penallta, it’s such a wonderful park and I would recommend a visit to anyone, especially if you have a dog or are in need of some fresh country air for a couple of hours.
