Synopsis: Telling your husband Mr. Darcy you are to be expecting a second addition to the family
It was a bright morning in March, and the sun streamed through the elegant windows of Pemberley, casting warm patterns on the carpeted floor. The household was abuzz with preparations, for today was a special day—although it was just another ordinary day for Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and you, his devoted wife.
In the master bedroom, you stood before your ornate mirror, admiring the simple lavender dress you had chosen for the day. Your hair was loosely gathered, a few tendrils falling gracefully around your face. You felt a strange mix of excitement and nervousness as you placed a hand delicately over your abdomen. The swell was subtle yet unmistakable, signaling the arrival of your second child.
Ever since the birth of your first daughter, Louisa, your love for Mr. Darcy had only deepened. He had shown unexpected joy in fatherhood—softening the once formidable exterior that captivated your heart. Yet, the news of a second child had taken you by surprise. You had hesitated to tell him, worried how he would react as the weight of his responsibilities as a gentleman weighed heavily on his shoulders.
“Darcy,” you called, your voice echoing softly in the large room. You turned, nervously fidgeting with the hem of your dress as he entered, tall and dignified, with an air of casual elegance about him.
“Good morning, my dear,” he replied, a hint of a smile gracing his lips as he strode toward you. He reached for your hand and gently squeezed it, a touch that sent warmth through you. Every morning, you marveled at how one look from him could envelop you in a sense of completeness.
“Are you ready for our walk today?” he asked, tilting his head as he studied you.
You hesitated and took a deep breath. “Darcy, there is something I wish to discuss.”
His dark brows knitted together slightly, a flicker of concern in his eyes. “What troubles you, my love?”
You felt the gravity of the moment and said, “I have news.” Your heart raced as you continued, “You are to become a father once more.”
His expression shifted instantly from concern to astonishment. “You are… pregnant?” His voice was a mixture of disbelief and joy, his stature seeming to fill the room.
“Yes,” you said softly, feeling a smile bloom on your lips at the sight of his reaction. “I am about three months along.”
Darcy stepped closer, wrapping his arms around you, pulling you into a fierce embrace. “Oh, my sweet wife!” he exclaimed, his voice muffled against your hair. “This is wonderful! A second child! I never thought…” He gently pulled back enough to look into your eyes. “You do realize that this means you will be responsible for an increase in my happiness, do you not?”
You giggled at his playful concern, your heart swelling with affection. “And you, Mr. Darcy, are already responsible for far too much of my happiness.”
“As I ought to be,” he replied with a wink, before his gaze shifted to your belly. “I can hardly believe it. A son, perhaps?”
“Or a daughter,” you teased.
“Either would be a miracle,” he said, a look of admiration crossing his features. “But I confess, a son would be rather preferable—an heir to carry on the Darcy name.” His tone quirked slightly with that familiar touch of pride.
“Well, we shall see,” you replied, placing your hand tenderly on your abdomen. “For now, let’s enjoy this moment. After this child arrives, life will be quite the adventure.”
Darcy chuckled, that warm, rich sound that made your heart flutter. “Ah, and what an adventure it has already been. My wife, my fierce and innovative companion, and now the nurturer of our growing family.” He paused, placing his hand over yours, resting on your belly. “I promise to be the father and husband you deserve.”
With hearts entwined and promises exchanged, the two of you took your first steps toward an unforgettable journey together. Hand in hand, you walked through the breathtaking landscapes of Pemberley, sharing dreams and laughter, envisioning the future that unfurled before you like the blossoming flowers of spring.
As you strolled and chatted, you realized that love, faith, and family are what shape a happy life, and with Mr. Darcy by your side, you were certain you could embrace all the surprises that awaited you. Each day was a story waiting to be written, and together, you would create a beautiful tapestry of moments—both sweet and profound—as your family grew.
Your heart brimmed with love and hope, for in the eyes of Mr. Darcy, you found not only a beloved husband but a partner ready to navigate the joys and challenges of life together, one cherished step at a time.

Movies sure keep on highlighting Lizzy's 👀 at how nice Pemberly would be to live in, but not enough of 👀 at the grand "for which nature has done so much" huge park going 10 miles (?) round for this enthusiastic nature walker.
“She stood there several minutes before the picture, in earnest contemplation, and returned to it again before they quitted the gallery. Mrs. Reynolds informed them that it had been taken in his father’s lifetime. There was certainly at this moment, in Elizabeth’s mind, a more gentle sensation towards the original than she had ever felt in the height of their acquaintance.
…and as she stood before the canvas on which he was represented, and fixed his eyes upon herself, she thought of his regard with a deeper sentiment of gratitude than it had ever raised before; she remembered its warmth, and softened its impropriety of expression.”
—Chapter 43 of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
Recently rereading Pride and Prejudice I came across this quote which, in my opinion, is one of the most relatable things about the book. The feeling that whatever bold choice you have made is the single most horrible, embarrassing choice that you could have made, that resulted in the worst possible outcome in the whole world.
"But Elizabeth heard not a word, and wholly engrossed by her own feelings, followed them in silence. She was overpowered by shame and vexation. Her coming there was the most unfortunate, the most ill-judged thing in the world!"
These are her thoughts when she lets her aunt and uncle, the Gardiners, take her to Pemberly, Mr Darcy's home in Derbyshire, under the assumption that he wouldn't be there, only to have him arrive just as she's leaving. Mind you, this is after she savagely rejected him with the "you are the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed upon to marry" line. Brutal. Despite that, he's polite and kind, but she's stuck in her head, so embarrassed about the fact that she was even there in the first place, and what he must think. Her train of thought wouldn't be anything other than painfully relatable except for the very last line of the book. Which is:
"With the Gardiners, they were always on the most intimate terms. Darcy, as well as Elizabeth, really loved them; and they were both ever sensible of the warmest gratitude towards the persons who, by bringing her into Derbyshire, had been the means of uniting them."
I just think the idea that you can go through something that you consider the worst thing to ever happen to you, the most embarrassing thing you have ever done, and later have the perspective to realize that had to happen in order for you to get something better. Okay yeah, if she had never let her aunt and uncle take her to Derbyshire, she would have avoided "the most unfortunate and ill-judged thing in the world". I'm sure she would have seriously appreciated short-term, but I think looking back on it, she'd willingly do it over again if it meant getting to marry the man she loves.
I just think it's lovely that life has a funny way of flipping things around, so what was once horribly embarrassing and painful later becomes something you're incredibly grateful for and wouldn't change for the world.

"They had now entered a beautiful walk by the side of the water, and every step was bringing forward a nobler fall of ground, or a finer reach of the woods to which they were approaching; but it was some time before Elizabeth was sensible of any of it; and, though she answered mechanically to the repeated appeals of her uncle and aunt, and seemed to direct her eyes to such objects as they pointed out, she distinguished no part of the scene."
-jane austen, pride and prejudice
the first of several drawings based on pride and prejudice - but i think this is the only one drawn from my imagination, the others are stills from p&p 2005
i make decisions in this first sketch book i would never make now, like the fish in the water. but i also didn't meticulously plan out each piece i went straight in with the ink
I think it’s safe to say the most famous/iconic/talked about moment from the 1995 Pride and Prejudice is Colin Firth in a wet shirt (I mean, even my sister who isn’t into P&P has seen that bit), and I guess I can see why (I guess?). Still, the sight didn’t affect me all that much.
Like yeah, he’s here, his shirt’s wet, he’s good-looking. End of the day it’s nothing I haven’t seen watching Olympic men’s high diving.
But Pemberly!!!
After several shots of Elizabeth and the Gardiners riding through the absolutely gorgeous park, we’re told the house will be shortly coming into view. The carriage rides through a grove of trees and we just know what’s going to be unveiled at their end. We wait for it, wait for it, wait for it....
Then!
Not gonna lie, I gasped right along with Elizabeth and just sat there in awe for a minute.
