my absolute favorite teacher from high school (who was coincidentally also an English teacher) would always pass out notecards on the first day and tell us to write our preferred name, a few facts about ourselves, and also our correct pronouns if they were "different from what's on the roster". he would use those cards to call on people for the rest of the year so he wouldn't forget nicknames or pronouns and i feel like that's something geoff would do :)

he definitely does a thingĀ - after awsten and the subsequent flood of kids coming to him for help/just to talk - where he asks the kids to write something down, anonymous or not, that they want him to know about them. heāll repeat the exercise a couple times throughout the year so that if they thought of something else or they werenāt comfortable in the beginning of the year but they are in january or march or may, they can tell him then.Ā
at the start of school, he might get, āiām nothing like my older brotherā or āi have anxietyā or āi work a lotā or ānothing,ā and toward the end of the year, heāll start getting sweet ones like āi only liked catcher in the rye because of youā andĀ āyouāre my favorite teacherā and evenĀ āi love you, mr. w.āĀ Ā
(of course there are other anonymous ones likeĀ āmy mom is abusiveā orĀ āi havenāt read a single book all semesterā orĀ āsometimes i think about running awayā but those were just like. examples of the contrast between august and when the kids are comfortable.)
