i just think mack, who is great with kids and a good older brother, would be a fantastic cg for a tiny!will. we see it when mack is small too, but imagine if he stays big and smitty regresses?
the best playmate and babysitter ever. they roughhouse the right amount for little!will's age, with gentle wrestling and play fights. mack can probably play pretend like nobody's business. he has a knack for seeming genuinely interested in the things smitty is talking about and can ask him all the right questions.

dude mack playing pretend is Perfect. i've talked before about how i think little!smitty would love playing house for many many reasons, and mack could Absolutely take part in that. although will runs a #Strict strict program in the house (if the characters arent all by the dinner table by 17:00 there's going to be Words. and maybe a little bit of frustration). i think mack is comfortable with and knows will well enough to play will's Characters exactly how will wants him to

if mack's asking questions and inquiring about everything, he knows little!will will always have an answer. mack loves how much will talks when he's little and how will can seemingly go on and on about simple questions. will spends a lot of time debating the sandwichness of a hot dog and mack listens for the entire hour of it, even when will is drawing sloppy diagrams in his journal with a terrible fisted grip on his marker because he's confused and needs to map out his answer<33

anon i too love to see cute boys suffer!! favorite thing actually! mackmack (!!! YAY NICKNAME!!) has tantrums ALL THE TIME. he's probably super easy to set off and has, like, zero patience when it comes to anything that doesn't happen his way when he's little. little mack's emotional regulation is allll over the fucking place. i love what you said here, "such big feelings in such a little guy, you know?" yes! that's exactly it when it comes to little!mack!!
i think he'd take so, so long to come down from them because i believe little!mack during a tantrum would be a yeller/screecher/aggressive crier, so he can't really hear the person trying to talk him down for, like, the first three minutes at least. this means it takes like. forever for him to come down from it.
however, i don't think little!mack (or any of the babysharks, really) would do well with time-outs or any sort of outright "punishment" like that.
(no matter how much people say otherwise about time-outs being a good alternative to corporal punishment or other things similar, kids see time-outs as punishments the same way they see standardized worksheets as work and not practice. this won't stop me from writing a little!sharks fic where they get put in time-out, of course, because i'm as easy as a flowing river, but that's the feeling i have right now, so we're going with it.)
so when he finally, finally is calm enough to talk, toff makes mack work through a reflection time instead where he asks mack to explain all of his decisions (why he was mad, who he was mad at, what he did, what he can do better), and it works way better because mack's not scared of reflection time. always ends in apologies, and mack hugs out whoever he threw a tantrum at, because that physical feeling of being forgiven is the only way he knows he's okay and can move on.
yes, even if it's himself that he's mad at. little!mack has had many a self-hug to apologize to himself.
when i first read your idea about Removing little!Mack from a Situation/coming down from a tantrum, i was kinda just thinking of a few scenarios/ideas. god you gave me so many ideas although i only cover two below:
idea 1: littles!wm on a playmat with cars or blocks and will takes something from mack (after will asks and mack says yes, mind you) and mack gets frustrated and yells about how unfair will is being and throws a block at will that hits him square in the head
cue will trying not to cry and clutching the site of injury as mack's still seeing red, and ty has to come in and be like "okayyy buddy playtime's over, let's go to our quiet corner and take a breather" and mack refuses and is kicking and shouting about how everyone's being so unfair and he doesn't like any of this! but toff drags him away anyway because despite being quite big (size-wise), he loses a lot of his motor functions when little which makes it very easy for toff to just pull him away from will
cat checks in on will, who's gone quiet and won't speak so he just points to where the block hit his head, a little red and pulsing but not bleeding (yay!). she gets him an ice pack for his head, not to worry!
toff and mack have quiet time, where all toff does is hold onto all of mack until his breathing is normal again, rocking them gently back and forth until mack's ready to speak. the lights are dim, white noise machine on, and mack eventually quiets and slumps into toff, exhausted.
idea 2: mack playing with tower building blocks and trying to balance them, but he doesn't get very far up because of his terrible hand-eye coordination while little and it comes crashing down really quickly every time.
he gets so, so frustrated with the blocks that he will throw them around because he doesn't know what else to do. he grips them in his hands so tight his knuckles turn white, and it hurts but it at least feels better than the stupid tower that's never gonna stand up straight!
one of the caregivers (i'm actually thinking of will this time!) notices mack working himself up and tries to get him to do something else, but mack refuses and hits them and pushes them away from him as he tries and tries again and it fails and he hit it again when he was pushing will away and it falls again and it's all wrong :( just sits with tears running down his face as he wails about it
and then out of the corner of his eye will, who knows now that maybe it's not the goal to just take mack away from the blocks, is slowly building it up and carefully placing the blocks and building it higher than mack has been able to for the past few. so now mack knows it's possible.
will silently hands him the next block and mack takes it, hovering over where he wants to place it and looking at will to see if it's right. will nods, mack places it, nothing crashes.
it takes a few more times for mack to finally crack a smile when he places a block down right. will cheers with him. mack mumbles that he's sorry for hitting will, and will just reminds him that it's not nice to do so, and that he's always here to help mack.
as for who little!wm are running to when they get injured:
toff is my number one go-to caregiver always when it comes to littles!wm. both ty and cat (if she's there). i think ty's taken care of so many people, both players and player's kids, across the many teams he's been on that he kinda just . Knows how to deal with them. not to mention the toffolis housed mis! cat cares about the boys sooo much too, she gets emotional a lot about them (re: her tearing up about misa moving out).
they'd run to toff to fix them up, then cat for comfort afterwards. toff bandaging their identical bloody knees and putting oil on their hockey bruises while cat distracts them from the burning alcohol wipe with promises of ice cream and playing with stella when they're allll done.
wenny/reavo/kiefer/delly next in line if they can't find toff/if toff isn't there (thinking about when toff got injured against the sabres and was out for part of the roadie that followed). i just think toff is papa of all time but thats a personal thing.
wenny i just think is great with kids in general, and great with the babysharks specifically. i've said lots about wenny before i think. just look at the guy. self-explanatory.
reavo has been very crucial in uplifting locker room spirit with how much he's mentioned and loved by everyone, and despite his tough love, he'd be quite gentle or at least a little less aggressive when they're small and teary and hurt (re: it's like watching a god on ice)
kiefer is more recent addition but, considering he got the A, i think he'd be great at 1. yelling at people who've hurt them (like those parents at the playground who yell at other parents for having unruly children when their kids get hurt, but surprisingly in this case the unruly children are not willmack) and 2. being there for them when they're hurt. i just really like papa kief and how aggressively he cares for all of the sharks
delly is their best older brotherfriend so this is kind of a no-brainer when it comes to who would patch them up, but they love that guy and that guy loves them back. he's their steve.
hope all of this makes sense and doesn't overwhelm you too much anon! i loved thinking about this, it was so fucking fun to get to delve into mack and tantrums and getting overwhelmed and all of those big big emotions when he's little!!! i love!! this concept!! so much!!!! so happy to provide daydream fuel!!

tyler "smiley guy" toffoli i'm sorry he just beats everyone by miles. of course i'm referring to one of my favorite videos of all time where mack is soooo tiny and toff is soooo fond of him :( i think he'd run to the toffolis at any given moment if im being honest. i bring him up every time because i just love love Love their relationship with each other ueueueee. bonus to wenny (gwg jump against the ducks), reavo, and delly (as a big brother more than caregiver if im being honest. like "that fucking bird that i hate", said affectionately, is the nature of their relationship)
i honestly think both age ranges have their challenges. toddler/baby mack is whiny and extremely easy to set off because he's got no emotional regulation and can easily get fussy/frustrated, but if little!mack is in the older age range, he wont let go of trying to commit to responsibilities even when small...he'll always be wanting to help or try and practice on the ice or just do something to make himself feel useful even if he's regressed and that makes him dangerous to leave alone. ultimately i think older little!mack would be easier to look after because he's easier to reason with than toddler little!mack
yes oral fixation Big one. i think he would get a pacifier but it'd take a while for him to accept needing one because he doesn't believe he needs one (if anyone needs one, it's him and will). before that, he for sure is putting any and everything in his mouth--fingers 1000%, yes to thumb sucking, but they all just kinda hang out around his mouth if he doesn't have anything else near them. and also the collars/hems of his shirts, and messing with his mouth guard even when he's off the ice. caregivers tell him oh so many times before they make him at least try a paci. he does Not take that well, but when he does...it's nice. nicer than he was expecting. and everything in him is warring against it, but fuck it really is nice not to wake up with a wet thumb or have a soggy part of his shirt he hates or the soaked corner of his blanket touching his cheek.
i don't think he'd let himself regress that often if it was voluntary to keep himself healthy. to me, most of his regressions feel like they'd be involuntary due to stress, pressure, a bad game, literally any conglomerate of Shit Happening in his Life, and he doesn't realize it until it happens. most of his drops feel like they'd happen post-bad games, and it's depending on the Type of game they had. like, the one game vs. the sens where he breaks his stick is a Yeah. the one against the blues with that horrific interview is a Yeah. the one where they lost against the hawks (2nd to last game of the season) is a 5050. does this make sense? it kinda does to me. canada l*ss during the ol*mp*cs (i dont even wanna think about it) was Definitely a big drop for little!mack.
if we want to think of happier mack moments,, i think he'd drop involuntarily seeing other littles drop around him. like if will was regressed first, mack is like at least 60% sure to follow.
