Someone needs to introduce PayScale to the concept of "unknown unknowns," as all this suggests is that there is one or more variable(s) they haven't yet identified and accounted for. One of which may well be the dataset itself. With such a massive dataset as "all pay data in the US," you can't control for all human variables and expect to get it down to zero.
Willing to bet they didn't control for the "they/them" people, most of whom are women, for starters.
