The story mode of Mortal Kombat X provides a significant presentation of its large cast of characters over the course of a 12 Chapter narrative, but it intelligently provides this on the players terms. While there are various fights scattered throughout each Chapter, each one often showcasing a particular character against several others, the player has the option to skip fights that they are having difficulty with. While this is limited to the number of Skip tokens they player has, it is a smart method of giving the player the experience they want, especially when it is not the core focus of the game as a whole.

The stages in Mortal Kombat X provide special additions to each fight, with background objects, walls, and even people providing an extra edge that can be taken advantage of in interesting ways. Whether slamming your opponent with a unlucky onlooker or breaking a barrel over their skull, these additions were provided with the hope that even a player doing badly can get in a free shot by having the luck and focus to make use of them.
