Okay so Patroclus watching on helplessly as Achilles gets himself killed and then them not even getting to reunite as ghosts but instead only being able to reunite in the underworld which Patroclus is bared entry too for so long is tragic as fuck but like... do you know what would have been way more painful? If they did get to see each other as ghosts when Achilles died - right up until Achilles was given funeral rites and sent to the underworld without Patroclus. Them both baring witness to Neoptolemus's refusal to put Patroclus's name on the tomb. Achilles knowing that Patroclus watched him destroy himself and others in his grief just as they watch the aftermath of his own death now. Them desperately trying to cling to each other as Achilles' tomb is marked but not really able to touch, both as insubstantial as mist, as any second Achilles will be sent to the underworld and leave his Patroclus behind on this battlefield forever.
achilles it reads. and beside it, patroclus
me: *is trying to read The Iliad*
my brain: *why read Homer when you can read patrochilles fanfiction*
Rereading this amazingly fabulous book! The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. She is an utter genius, her writing is just gorgeous, the story is easy to understand without a massive knowledge of Greek myths. Just go read it! Now!

Just listening to Florence & the machine's Cosmic Love and thinking about the ending of The Song of Achilles
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you
Slightly obsessed with the idea of Arthur growing up in post-roman britannia being taught about the Trojan War as a boy and having read the Iliad. And then him suddenly seeing parallels between himself & merlin and Achilles and Patroclus. Realising that he'd burn the world down too if he lost Merlin.
