Ikigai can be seen as having meaning in life - a reason to wake up in the morning. It has been suggested that people who have ikigai not only live longer, but experience better health and higher levels of well-being. Importantly, ikigai must be taken on willingly - it cannot be forced upon someone. By planning for, participating in, reflecting on and day-dreaming about something one truly loves, health, joy and life energy is encouraged to flow throughout one’s being. Some teachers suggest following a specific process to find one’s ikigai and devote one’s life to it. Mokusō (pronounced "mohk-sou") is performed before beginning a training session in order to "focus" & "clear one's mind", very similar to the zen concept of mushin. This term is more formally known to mean "warming up the mind for training hard". It was designed to channel the breathing in order to prevent injury, maintain focus, and prepare for training.
