Pass The Rock
Pass The Rock is based around the idea of children finding fun in playing with rocks and the title phrase that alludes to the game of basketball. At 51” x 16” x 18” the basketball hoop is sized for children to use and by making it out of welded rebar as well as a steel sheet, it is strong enough to handle both child sized basketballs and rocks. I didn’t want there to be a physical rock present in the artwork, so instead I recorded audio of myself playing basketball using the structure as well as a ball and a rock. This audio is played from the piece in order to emphasize that idea of fun and to still have a rock present. I think it adds a lot more to the work than just placing a rock underneath the rim. With this being my first welding project I’m very happy with it. It not only captures my “pass the rock” idea perfectly, but it also gave me a lot of experience in a new medium.
