Pascal Comelade and Les LimiĂąanas âThe Nothing Twistâ 2014. Trouble In Mind Records, yellow vinyl. Weâre big fans of Les LimiĂąanas, the très chic garage-psych French duo of Lionel and Marie LimiĂąana (reminiscent of the Velvet Underground) but I was unaware of Pascal Comelade, with whom they collaborated on this instrumental LP. Comelade is also French, specializing in experimental music. From Discogs: âComelade began making strange cover songs of rock and easy listening standards with such instruments as singing saw, toy piano etc. He later developed an unconfoundable style...âThe Nothing Twist has Les LimiĂąanasâ signature laid-back organ-forward style with a heavy garage beat and mixes in Comeladeâs âunconfoundableâ element with weird sliding sounds from organs, plastic guitars and other instruments that arenât readily identifiable but kazoo is definitely one of them, also possibly theremin. Most of the tracks are written by Comelade, Les LimiĂąanas or both and really groovy - I especially like âCarnival of Soulsâ (very creepy-carnival yet still a cooler-than-cool 60â˛s vibe), the title track âThe Nothing - Twist,â the wicked-beat and organ insanity of âT.B. Jerk,â âWunderbarâ which is super-dark and hypnotic, and âOne of Us, One of Us, One of Usâ which is awesomely similar to The Stoogesâ âI Wanna Be Your Dog.â  There are also a couple of covers like âWhy Are We Sleeping?â which was originally released in 1968 by the British psych band Soft Machine - itâs really great, in my opinion way better than the original. They also cover British pop singer Chris Andrews 1965 hit âYesterday Manâ mixing in a whisper of psych and a lot of weirdness to an oom-pah beat but otherwise bland 60â˛s pop song (not surprisingly, Andrewsâ song was HUGE in Germany). Iâm not that crazy about their cover of âGreen Fuzâ originally by Texas garage rockers Green Fuz in 1969 (The Cramps have also covered that track).
