Pascal Comelade and LesĀ LimiƱanasĀ āThe Nothing Twistā 2014. Trouble In Mind Records, yellow vinyl. Weāre big fans ofĀ Les LimiƱanas, theĀ trĆØs chic garage-psych French duo of Lionel and MarieĀ LimiƱana (reminiscent of the Velvet Underground) but I was unaware of Pascal Comelade, with whom they collaborated on this instrumental LP. Comelade is also French, specializing in experimental music. From Discogs:Ā āComelade began making strange cover songs of rock and easy listening standards with such instruments as singing saw, toy piano etc. He later developed an unconfoundable style...āThe Nothing TwistĀ hasĀ Les LimiƱanasā signature laid-back organ-forward style with a heavy garage beat and mixes in ComeladeāsĀ āunconfoundableā element with weird sliding sounds from organs, plastic guitars and other instruments that arenāt readily identifiable but kazoo is definitely one of them, also possibly theremin. Most of the tracks are written by Comelade,Ā Les LimiƱanas or both and really groovy - I especially likeĀ āCarnival of Soulsā (very creepy-carnival yet still a cooler-than-cool 60ā²s vibe), the title trackĀ āThe Nothing - Twist,ā the wicked-beat and organ insanity ofĀ āT.B. Jerk,ā āWunderbarā which is super-dark and hypnotic, and āOne of Us, One of Us, One of Usā which is awesomely similar to The StoogesāĀ āI Wanna Be Your Dog.āĀ Ā There are also a couple of covers likeĀ āWhy Are We Sleeping?ā which was originally released in 1968 by the British psych band Soft Machine - itāsĀ really great, in my opinion way better than the original. They also cover British pop singer Chris Andrews 1965 hit āYesterday Manā mixing in a whisper of psych and a lot of weirdness to an oom-pah beat but otherwise bland 60ā²s pop song (not surprisingly, Andrewsā song was HUGE in Germany).Ā Iām not that crazy about their cover ofĀ āGreen Fuzā originally by Texas garage rockers Green Fuz in 1969 (The Cramps have also covered that track).
