Summary: Luke sneaks into Awstens apartment after a nightmare. Awsten doesnāt know how to help.
(1.1k words)
A/N: This fic is based off of me and my friends ( @decemberr-morning ) luke x the property lore ^^ no knowledge of the au is needed though!
Awsten wasnāt sure what time it was. The last time he checked the clock it was 11 p.m. He wasnāt sure how long itās been since then.
Heās been having a hard time sleeping lately. Maybe itās because of all the stress heās been putting himself through working on the second installment of Intellectual Property, but even then he should still at least be able to a bit of sleep in. Heās been lying in his bed for hours, letting the minutes tick by as he stared at the darkness above him, which was really just his ceiling.
Putting himself into the world of the property was tiring, having to focus on that part of himself he tried to lock away, but it should help. He wouldnāt have to lock it away if he can get it out of his mind, which he usually does through his music. Despite that, it doesnāt seem to be working very well.
Tonight was one of the harder nights. Usually if he couldnāt sleep, Luke would be there with him, making sure he was okay and keeping him company, but tonight was one of the few times he didnāt stay over. That was totally fine, Luke has his own life. He has his own music to work on⦠but still. He missed having someone right next to him to rely on. Sure, Luke said he could call at any time, but he didnāt want to bother him any further. Heās done so much for Awsten already.
Luke was one of the sweetest people Awsten knew. He spent so much time making sure Awsten was doing okay during such a hard period of his life despite the consequences it had on Luke himself. Awsten could see it clearly, the way Luke was more tired than usual and waking up with frequent headaches⦠it made Awsten feel bad, but he couldnāt do anything about it.
Awstenās told Luke before that if caring for him only hurts Lukes mental health, he needs to take a break, no matter how much he cares for Awsten. Awsten knows how tiring it can get caring for people like him, heās lived it multiple times with Geoff and Otto
The thing is, if Luke wants to help, heāll do it no matter what. It was his best and worst trait.
Awsten sighed, rolling onto his side and shutting eyes, a last ditch attempt to fall asleep, which obviously failed. Awsten wasnāt surprised.
He stayed there for what felt like hours, although it was realistically no more than 30 minutes. It was around then he heard his front door getting unlocked and opened.
He was confused, only a few people had a key to his apartment, and he didnāt keep any spares outside for safety reasons. Otto or Geoff usually arrived during the day if they wanted to surprise Awsten with a visit, and Luke- oh. It was probably Luke.
After a few minutes, he could hear light shuffling coming towards his door, halting at his door. He could see Lukeās feet from the light under the door.
This isnāt the first time this has happened, but Awsten was never awake while it happens. Sometimes he just wakes up with Luke next to him or on his couch even though he wasnāt there previously. Awsten had no issue with it, he just wished he knew why. It seems heāll finally be figuring that out now though.
He heard a shaky breath coming from the other side of the door, and he could feel the worry spreading through his body quickly. The door knob turned, light from the hallway spilling into the room as Luke stepped inside quietly.
Awsten shut his eyes, trying his best to pretend to still be asleep so he wouldnāt alert Luke.
The bed shift as Luke sat on it, carefully pulling the rest of his body onto the bed as carefully and quietly as he could manage. His breathing was heavy and noticeably unstable, all Awsten wanted to do was hold him close, but he didnāt know how Luke would respond Awsten seeing him so vulnerable, so he held back.
It broke Awstenās heart when he realized that Luke was staying as far away from Awsten as he could. Part of Awsten knew it was because Luke didnāt want to āwake upā Awsten, but it still saddened him. Luke had helped him so much, why canāt he do the same?
He felt helpless, lying there and pretending to sleep while Luke sounded seconds away from bursting into tears, but even if he did reveal he was awake, what could he do? Heās not good at comforting people at all, and he didnāt even know what was wrong with Luke in the first place.
Awstenās mind kept racing until he snapped back to earth, realizing Lukeās breath had evened out and he was less tense. He had fallen asleep. Awsten sighed, opening his eyes and scooting closer to Luke, laying the blanket on both of them as Awsten gently wrapped his arms around Luke.
If he couldnāt help Luke while he was awake, then he would at the very least care for him in his sleep.
Awsten grabbed his phone from the side table that Luke was worryingly close to hitting, he tapped the screen, eyes widening when he saw the time on the screen, 3:37.
Once again, he wondered what couldāve possibly happened to cause this to happen, especially this late. Luke always talked about how stressful driving at night was for him.
In the back of Awstenās mind, he remembered the nightmares Luke would have that have been increasing recently. Awsten let out a heavy sigh at memory of the many times heās had to wake up a shaking or crying Luke, thinking about Luke having to wake up from that all alone⦠no wonder why he would drive all the way way to Awstenās place. Awsten would want someone with him too.
He ran his hand through lukeās curls, which were all tangled, as if he woke up and immediately drove to Awstenās without a second thought. His poor boy, Awsten thought. He canāt imagine what happened to Luke to shake him up this much.
He thought about the other times Awsten found Luke in his apartment randomly in the mornings. Was it like this every time? Itās only happened a few times, no more than five⦠but still. He was worried. He never wants Luke to struggle as much as Awsten does, and if Awsten can do anything to prevent it, heāll do it.
He held Luke tighter. Luke would do the same for Awsten, he thought. Luke has done the same for Awsten. Awsten sighed into the blonde curls, pressing a small kiss into them. He gently whispered,
