Well, there is the 800 page book.

That’s horrifying. Menstrual cups don’t completely remove such medical risks—you’re still putting a foreign object inside your body—but you don’t have to change them nearly as often as you do a pad or tampon to be safe!

The cup only leaks if you haven’t inserted it correctly, such as by pushing it in too far or not rotating it to ensure its suctioned in place. This does take a spot of practice, admittedly, but it’s not rocket science, I promise!

You should empty out the cup at least twice a day (every twelve hours or so), although this is more for sanitary purposes than out of concern that the thing might overflow (because it won’t overflow in that time range, even with a heavy period). I usually empty it an extra time (so every eight hours instead of every twelve), just to be paranoid, but I don’t sweat it if I forget or don’t have access to a bathroom or something.

It’s very easy to clean! Again, there’s going to be much less blood than you might expect, and I’ve personally found the “ick factor” to be much less than dealing with a tampon and heavy flow. During your period, emptying and cleaning is simply rinsing out the cup with tap water, giving it a quick scrub with mild soap, and dabbing it dry. In between periods, you just boil it in water.
