When I first saw the series Earthling, I immediately connected with the idea of cropped faces because it resonates with the series I made in second year painting-- where I also took images of myself and cropped them. The way she cropped the images are interesting to me, because they are very close up. It takes away their identity as models because you are not seeing any remarks if they are models. The way it is cropped shows only the face of the figures, without knowing these are models I would assume they are portraits of regular everyday people. However, the way Werner has captured the "expression" of these models show that there's unlikely the presence of different emotions. They all express the emotion of statue-like where you label these expressions as emotionless, similarly what you would see in the faces of models in magazines or runways. By zooming in the faces of these models they loose their details, however Werner have captured the details by using different tones of colours in the faces, they appear illustrative like yet painterly.
