I really hate when people overly praise my work in special education - like yesterday, a substitute teacher came to introduce himself at the end of a class and said "God bless you" and it really rubbed me the wrong way.
It's one thing to say "you must work hard!" Or "that must be rewarding." My job is hard in a lot of ways, and I work my ass off, and it IS rewarding. But the whole "god bless you" or "oh you must be a saint I could NEVER" ...it tells me exactly what you think of kids with special needs, and immediately puts you on my list of people I don't trust with my students.
People in my position are underappreciated, sure, but so are these kids. Belittling them in order to praise me is a gross misunderstanding of what I do, why I do it, and all the amazing people you're missing out on due to your prejudice and ableism.
