There are 4 types of cellular communication pathways:
The first one is located in the top left corner and is known as Direct Contact (1). Cells that communicate this way are closer to each other and send chemical messengers through gap junctions.
The second pathway is known as Paracrine Signaling (2) and, unlike the previous one, involves a secretory cell that scatters chemical messengers towards a group of target cells. It is important to note that these messengers can be captured by enzymes on the extracellular matrix.
Third spot is known as Endocrine Signaling (3), named as such due to the hormones that travel long distances from the endocrine gland that produces it towards the target cells that are farther away.
Last but not least, Synaptic Signaling (4) is related to communication between neurons in the nervous system. Neurons employ neurotransmitters traveling from the nucleus of the cell through the axon and reach the target cell past the synaptic gap.
