I’m currently reading this by Phumlani Pikoli titled “The Fatuous State of Severity.” I just learnt that the stories are centered around his life experiences with mental health issues. While in a mental health clinic for three weeks, his therapists recommended journaling as a means of healing so he wrote short stories instead. When asked whether it was a fictionalized version of his life on Afternoon express, the author quoted Gabriel Garcia Márquez stating “nothing I have ever written was untrue.” As I find reading as a form of communion, Khanya (who first introduced me to this book) and I are gonna read this together after having dragged her from the Kitchen and showing her I finally got it.
