BACKGROUND
Jin was born into structure, money, manners, and tradition, but was always more interested in a more artistic approach to life. The static between the notes, the hum under the silence - he found his language in art galleries, the firmness of a vinyl, and in late-night tunes.ย
Jinโs family had a plan for him. Medical, or law. Jin did neither, but chose the arts and music production instead. His family were less than thrilled. Over the years, they might have come to terms with it, but Jin didnโt stick around long enough to find out. Heโs not really in touch with them other than the odd phone call where he doesnโt really tell them much about what heโs up to, or annual โhappy birthdayโ texts. He feels ashamed that he let his family down, and scared that they wonโt accept him back. He hasnโt talked to them about it, worried that itโll make the situation worse. He would rather it be complicated between them, than not have them in his life at all.ย
Jin made a name for himself in the music industry without ever really chasing the spotlight for himself. He became a music producer, and was known for precision and depth. He worked in South Korea, mainly with kpop artists, until he managed to land a job in Universal Music in the states! The offer couldnโt have come at a better time. His โsituationshipโ of one year wanted more from him - they wanted commitment, which terrified Jin more than anything. Without hesitation, he took the Universal Music offer, and left South Korea, only shooting his partner a text saying something about gripping the opportunity while he had it, and promptly changed his number to an American one so he couldnโt be reached. It was a cowardly thing to do, but it was easier than figuring out his feelings, or worse (in his mind) - actually being in love.
Not everything that glitters is gold, however. Eventually, the glamour of Universal Music turned into noise. Too many egos, too many eyes, too many cameras on him. Too much pressure, and not enough soul. So, he quit.
The years after blurred into constant movement. He drifted through cities, working odd jobs - DJing, bartending, sound-checking live sets at festivals, but never staying long. It wasnโt really about escaping anymore. It was more that he didnโt really have a reason to stop.ย
Eventually, he landed in a small town just outside New York City, working as a sound designer for independent films, and DJing weekends at a dive bar that didnโt ask questions. It wasnโt nearly as glamorous as the big leagues he had been in, but it was honest. For the first time in years, Jin thought about actually staying. Maybe try and rebuild a connection with his family, and other people he left behind. However, he never got the chance.ย
EXTRAS:
Does not like being called hyun-jin. Only his parents call him that. He prefers Jin.ย
Has a lot of loud noise in his work life, and enjoys a quieter personal life.
The kind of quiet that feels safe. Easy to talk to once you start. He has a calm, steady presence that makes it easy to breathe around him - no pressure, no performance.
Doesnโt talk too much at first, but once he warms up, heโll hit you with dry humour, perfectly timed one-liners, deadpan delivery, and a solid meme folder.
Like with people, he likes to take time to get to know a piece of art - be it a book, a painting, or a song.
The kind of person whoโll text his close friends at 2AM on his way home from work if they want junk food โ or just to share a random thought he had while walking.
Definitely spiritual. At least 2 of his flats have been haunted (probably).
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:
โWhatโs the last thing you remember before arriving on the island?โย
Jin ran a hand through his hair, letting out a thoughtful hum. โI was working late in my studio again, having just chowed down sone ramen.โ He pursed his lips thoughtfully, leaning back in his seat as he tried to remember the night in the studio. It was like any other night, honestly. No sleep, only Jin and his mixing desk. โI remember putting my headphones on to listen to the track I was working on, and thenโฆ nothing. Just woke up here with this charming thing on my wrist.โ He held up the hand with the crystal bracelet. โI keep thinking I fell asleep and this is some weird fever dream, but,โ he chuckled lightly. โFeels pretty real, man.โย
โDo you think you will be remembered or forgotten?โ
Jinโs expression grew contemplative, his fingers uncsonsciously tracing the edge of the crystal bracelet. This wasnโt really something he had thought much about. Mostly because he didnโt allow himself to venture down that route. He always liked to think the work he did as a producer made an impact, but when itโs all said and done, he was just a name in fine print on the back of some artists album. The same with his DJing and sound design. His name would be buried in the credits. โProbably forgotten. Depending on who you talk to. Maybe my family will remember me,โ it was an attempt at a joke, but it fell kind of flat even with the small smile tugging on his lips. โBut yeah,โ he cleared his throat, forcing himself back out of that train of thought. โForgotten, probably.โย
โDo you think with your heart or your brain?โ
Jin let out a quiet laugh. โBrain, definitely.โ He rubbed the back of his neck, considering his words carefully. โLogic is easier to trust than emotions, you know? You can take apart a problem piece by piece until you understand how it works. You canโt really do that with emotions, or whatever it is the heart operates on.โ He paused for a moment, then added. โThough, I guess my heart decides whoโs worth keeping around, and whoโs worth trusting. Once someoneโs earned my loyalty, thatโs it. Brain might tell me itโs dumb, butโฆโ he shrugged. โSometimes you ignore the smart play and do whatโs right instead.โย
