The following clip is from Pokémon, and features multiple Pokémon jumping in joy. You can see straight away that squash & stretch is being used on each Pokémon. The first five stretch down, and then when they stretch up to jump, another four appear in the frame. The anticipation would be the the Pokémon stretching down, ready for the next motion which is jumping. The acting is important in this scene, as it produces a happy feeling towards the audience. The facial expressions of each Pokémon is so happy, you can’t but help smile when you see how happy they are. The camera angle is just a wide shot, and t then the frame becomes filled by all the Pokémon. The movement of the characters would be classed as slow in and out, since almost all movement starts slowly, builds up speed, etc. This scene is very appealing to look at as all the Pokémon look cute and have loving facial expressions. The background is a solid drawing, which makes the Pokémon seem like they are in a 3-dimentional space.
The following clip is from Avatar the Last Air Bender, and features two fire nation people bending fire. The following clip uses squash & stretch and anticipation. The top character squashes down and stretches as they leap, whereas the bottom character squashes a little whilst they preform. The anticipation would be the top character bending down to jump and the movements they do with there hands. For example, the different hand movements would make the audience expect some type of fire move to follow after. When the body stops moving, the rest of the clothing/hair carries on moving. This is also known as follow through and overlapping action. The movements also start off slow, speed up to the peak such as the jump and then slow back down again. The secondary action could be the fire surrounding each move the character makes. You could say that this scene is appealing to look at, as the bright red and orange compliment what is happening on screen. Every move the characters make are over exaggerated to make it seem more convincing.

The following clip is from The Amazing World of Gumball, and features Gumball and Darwin being scared by a clown. The animation uses squash and stretch, for example they are squashed already whilst looking out the window and then they stretch up when they are scared. The scared look they have there face could be classed as anticipation as it helps communicate actions to the audience. The camera has two angles in this scene, but one of them feels out of place. The first angle is a wide showing the characters in the window. The second is the same shot, but closer. The camera changes to draw the attention into the scene, and then all of a sudden a clown appears inside the room with them. The shot change feels out of place, as it should have changed as the clown appears. This simple shot change draws more attention into the scene, and adds to the overall feel. The timing of everything also feels slightly out of place, but this show plays around with the physics of animation all the time. For example, they use 2-D animation, 3-D animation, real life figures and when appropriate other styles of animating. The art style is always colourful and full of life, which makes it engaging and fun for the audience. In the photo above, you can see how all the characters are different styles of animation but it works once its all together. The facial expression changing could be classed as a secondary action, but so could them raising there arms when they get scared. You could also say the characters are appealing to look at, as the colours of them are bright and cheerful.

The following clip is from Fairy Tail, and features Natsu falling into Lucy. The first principle I want to mention is anticipation. We see only for a split second Lucy has her arms out to catch Natsu falling. They also use a small amount of squash and stretch when Natsu falls. When he falls into Lucy, he’s squashed down and once he realises he landed in Lucy’s arms he stretches back up. Simple movements like this make the characters seem more realistic to the audience. This scene has two camera angles, one mid-shot of Natsu falling and a close-up of Natsu looking at Lucy. The first shot allows the audience to see the action happening, whereas the second shot allows the audience to see the emotions of the characters. For example, when Natsu looks at Lucy she blushes. If you look at Natsu’s eyes in the first shot, compared to the second they change. In the first shot, it seems like he had been fighting and he was lost in that mindset. However, in the second shot when he turns to look at Lucy his eyes change back to normal. It shows this embrace they have calms him and brings him back to reality. The background also changes in the second shot, this compliments the actions of the characters as it makes it seem like for a split second it’s just them alone together. The acting of the characters is very simple, Natsu was mad and then calms down, whereas Lucy looks worried and then is reassured/embarrassed. The characters also need to be somewhat appealing to look at, for example the way Lucy has been drawn is pleasing to look at. She is a big chested, young looking, blonde haired girl. Female characters in manga and anime’s are known for being beautiful with unrealistic body shapes but you could also apply that to the male characters too.
