Blood Tests and Imaging Studies Used to Diagnose Panic Disorder
Diagnostic Investigations for Panic Disorder
To properly diagnose panic disorder, a mix of laboratory testing, mental evaluations, and clinical evaluation is needed.
Clinical Evaluation
Medical History and Physical Exam:A comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s medical history, including any family history of anxiety or panic disorders, is carried out to rule out further possible reasons for the symptoms.
Psychiatric Assessment
Mental Health Evaluation: A qualified mental health professional conducts an evaluation to assess the severity of the disorder, the frequency of panic attacks, and their impact on daily life.
Diagnostic Criteria (DSM-5)
Recurrent Panic episodes: The DSM-5 defines panic disorder as a condition in which a person has frequent, unplanned panic episodes and shows ongoing anxiety about having more attacks.
Laboratory Tests
Blood Tests:Blood tests are conducted in order to look for thyroid function, blood sugar levels, and other factors that could exacerbate symptoms.
Imaging Studies
MRI or CT Scans: Imaging studies may be recommended if there is suspicion of neurological causes for panic symptoms or to rule out other underlying conditions.
