On Campaigning
I thought the purpose of campaigning is to convince people and rally them to your cause. And when I say āpeopleā I mean everyone, including those on the other side of the fence. I highly doubt that insulting those people will help convince them to cross over that fence. I donāt think there is a lot to gain by holding campaign rallies for your supporters so you can collectively gush and cheer on your common beliefs, and jeer on those who do not. I mean, your supporters will already vote for you. Instead, I think you need to think about those who will not and try to understand why. They are growing in number and that has to mean something. The other candidate is feeding on their fears, paranoia and prejudices and he is gaining some traction. What is it that makes them afraid, paranoid and prejudiced that they would be willing to vote for an obnoxious candidate? That needs to be addressed, and not dismissed with speeches of condemnation and messages of hope and love and rainbows and unicorns. These kinds of messages have already lost their impact in the face of a very real danger of getting killed in their own backyard. They obviously feel neglected that they have clung to the man who had the guts to call out the elephant in the room, and offered them false hopes. This man has articulated what any politician is thinking about but is too afraid to speak of because of fear of backlash. I think this āpolitical correctnessā thing has inhibited people in so many ways and it's not always a good thing.
