My mom and I went to nine stores today, and her and my dad went to like six stores the other day, looking for YEAST.
Because I got a bread machine for my 21st birthday and we had none. And we are in the middle of a fucking pandemic and FUCKING EVERYONE is baking now.
So, I’m in my next to last store. I see this woman who’s been on the phone with her partner. I say “hey, you wouldn’t by any chance see any yeast over here, do you? Sometimes it takes a second pair of eyes.” And this woman not only searched the entire isle, but called her mother in law to make sure we were in the right place and then she continues to ask her if she has any. This woman was willing to meet me somewhere so I could have some yeast to make bread. Her mother in law runs a daycare, and she makes all the food, so she usually does, but has run out. She apologizes for not being able to help, and I’m just tickled by how much this woman was willing to help me.
So, out of sheer curiosity, we go to my favorite pandería. I go in with my four semesters of high school Spanish and a credit card.
“Hey, uh, do you guys have yeast?”
“Huh?”
“Do you have yeast? For bread?”
“I don’t know what that is.”
“Okay, uh, I’m sorry, my Spanish isn’t great, levadura?”
“I will go ask.”
I just kinda shuffle around, expecting to have to buy the pound of yeast for $30 on amazon.
“Is this what you need?”
She hands me a perfect package of active dry yeast. I call my mother five times but she will not answer because I’m making sure this is what we need. I tell the woman it’ll be just a minute, I need to make sure I’m getting the right thing, my mother is outside.
“You can take it to her, it’s okay.”
I swear to her I am not trying to steal $7 worth of yeast.
My mother checks it over and looks astonished.
“This is exactly what we need.”
I walk in and thank the woman profusely.
“You have no idea how long I’ve been looking, it was just my birthday, this is the best thing to happen all day”
“Oh, don’t worry. It’s okay. I’m just happy I learned a new word today!”
Honestly the highlight of my week and I get to make more bread tomorrow so hell yeah.
