In my setting of World Storyia, there are at least 72 countries. This is what I have envisioned so far about one of the first countries I came up with: Pallettae.
My apologies if my idea of the countryâs backstory comes off as incomplete, Iâm still trying to organize and remember everything.
Pallettae is the home country of my main character Roxanne Lacer and serves as the Fantasy Culture Counterpart to the United States of America. It was founded in the year 4377 E.A (Empireâs Aftermath*), 337 years before the beginning of the story. Initially in the era that would become Pallettae were 12 colonies of Stuart, Sargente, Cassatat, Childashac, Kelleran, Wahlor, Battateus, Lee-Kong, OâKoeffae, Kleinaran, Van Gauche and Fatima, each one belonging to a different nation (Victoria Kingdom, Shengillet Empire, Pinnopo, Drachma Empire, Florencezatina , and more to be determined).Â
Initially each of these colonies constantly kept fighting with each other as they initially saw themselves as extensions of their nations. However, over time the colonies would end up developing better and better relations with one another, which would then seek to be free from their nations of origin as they truly considered themselves separate. After declaring their independence, the numerous nations that ruled over the colonies decided to force them to become their subjects again by force, leading to what historians declare the War of Pallettae being started in 4361, 16 years before the countries official founding.Â
The War for Pallettae lasted for 8 years, with the 12 colonies successfully winning their independence. The War itself was one of the most interesting conflicts of the 44th Century E.A., as the 12 nations fighting over their colonies spent just as much time fighting each other as they were fighting the assorted colonies, seeking to add more territory as well as due to past grudges against one another. This worked out to the benefit of the menagerie of independence-seeking dependent states, as they operated as one to repel their former homelands during this melee-a-treize, all the while for the most part building even deeper unity between each other. Eventually, after 8 years of fighting, Pallettae officially became free of itâs former sovereign nations in 4369, as they viewed fighting for it to be an endeavour that was costing them more than they were going to gain. However, the nation still hadnât truly been founded or even fully united.
For the next 8 years the assorted ex-colonies would slowly but surely try to work out the various issues within themselves and each other so as to make the formation of the nation possible. While relations were positive for the most part, there were several vocal groups who opposed the idea of unification and seeking to stay independent, often causing heated discussions that further delay the unification. Each colony also acted as if it were a separate nation of itâs own. Ultimately though, Pallettae was officially founded on April 19, 4377, which is funny enough the day the various colonies had declared their desire for independence and when their parent nations declared war.
It became declared one of the Greatest 12 (twelve most powerful and prosperous nations on the planet), exactly 250 years ago in the year 4627.
When deciding on the name of the country, itâs been documented that the delegates who were to choose a name had been locked in the Congression Room for 2 weeks, as people felt they were taking their sweet time coming up with a name and didnât feel as if Assorted Colonies was fitting. When they started to suffer from hunger from depleted rations they initially considered the word palette as the countryâs name as a joke to distract themselves from the hunger, which then spiraled into a conversation about the colors of each otherâs clothes, as well as joke about the floors of the building looking like a pallet. Thus, the name Pallettae was decided on (and the delegates being let out before they attempt to pick off the weakest for nourishment).
The national animal of the nation is the turkey. Such a word had been used against the colonies against each other when they were separate and hostile entities with ties of nationalism to their parent states, as well as by their parent nations to them and each other. Over time the insult became something of an endearing term the colonies used for each other. In fact, the national animal was the first thing decided and agreed on.Â
* Empireâs Aftermath refers to the point in time in which the Jade Empire effectively ceased to exist in the setting. The Jade Empire was basically the settingâs equivalent to the Roman Empire, the Chinese Empire and the Mongol Empire (Mongol in terms of conquering much of the world before decline and collapse, Chinese in terms of historical length and Roman in being a known bastion of knowledge in the world during its existence.
