Rice Farmers in the Philippines face more pressure as imports continue
Philippine rice farmers are facing losses since Palay prices have dropped below production costs. Rice farmers sold palay for as low P13 per kilo, whereas costs range from P16- P20, along with prices in some areas dropping to P8. Weather damage has further decreased the harvests. Prices remained weak despite temporary import restrictions along with rice imports continuing under a flexible tariff system. Farmers fear increased pressure from cheaper imported rice.
