back when we lived in beijing the rents would take us to a fellow ofw's apartment to practice chinese and we'd read this cute kids book with a yellow hippo in it. i only remember the words "hippo" and "soap", and so far, not much luck finding the book online.
never been more glad to be processing bullshit and reparenting at the same time there happens to be so many good works out exploring trauma and abuse through the framework of children's media. best of both worlds rlly... you get the cute innocent aesthetic AND a nuanced depiction of the reality you live in (and the one you lived in as a child)
man i forgot how existential touch-and-feel books used to make me... as a little kid i used to ruminate w my limited vocabulary and general life experience over my assumption that the fur in the book was ripped from the body of a dead animal

me as a child:
resources i've been dipping into that discuss the subject of childhood during the middle ages

In many ways, Empress Matilda can be seen as a pawn of the men in her world. Sent away aged eight to match with the Holy Roman Emperor, she
favorite bookstores in order of sentiment
Wangfujing Bookstore / Wangfujing Street (Beijing, CN) β childhood staple. has everything under the sun. used to flip through Dragonology and animal biology books obsessively. bought my very first novel (Warrior Cats lol).
Fully Booked / Alabang Town Center (Manila, PH) β varied selection, albeit pricey as hell. took a couple friends shopping for my 18th birthday and went apeshit. they were having a huge Discworld sale on the day so i splurged.
Kinokuniya / Siam Paragon (Bangkok, TH) β varied selection. purchased all my Dungeon Meshi volumes plus my Iliad copy, bought gifts for biktor's family.
AsiaBooks / Paradise Park (Bangkok, TH) β bought Piranesi and a few others on sale, the former now a favorite book.
Kinokuniya / KLCC Mall (Kuala Lumpur, MY) β huge selection, took up the whole floor. didn't buy anything (did consider getting A Natural History of Dragons) but it was fun.
