ââto leave a message, pleaseââ
PadmĂŠ switched her comm screen off in frustration.
Obi-Wan still wasnât answering his comm.
Heâs a busy man, she reminded herself, and it is still early in the evening. Just because he hasnât replied to your message doesnât mean that anything is wrong.
But the sinking feeling in her gut told her otherwise.

âThe Chancellor,â PadmĂŠ echoed flatly.
Anakin nodded, looking uncomfortable.
As well he should.
âWhere would the Chancellor have heard such a ridiculous rumor? And why would he pay any attention to it, let alone pass it on?â she asked.
And why, she added silently, would he have passed it on to you, of all people?

Giddean Danu shook his head, doubt plainly written across his dark face. âIf we are to openly oppose the Chancellor, we need the support of the Jedi. We need their moral authority. Otherwise, what do we have?â
âThe moral authority of the Jedi, such as it is,â Bana Breemu said, âhas been spent lavishly upon war; I fear they have none left for politics.â
âOne Jedi, then,â PadmĂŠ offered to the others. At least let me speak the truth to my love. At least. Please, she pleaded with them silently. âThere is one Jediâone whom I truly know all of us can trust absolutely âŚâ
Her voice trailed off into appalled silence when she realized that she wasnât talking about Anakin. â Matthew Stover's Revenge of the Sith novelization

Speaking of which, hereâs a TNOF snippet update:
âI wish I could be, for your sake, but⌠Iâm not Anakin,â he said quietly.
âNeither am I,â she retorted, tone sharp enough to draw blood, and exited the room.

@penultimatepanic replied to your post:ok but what if anakin had somehow...
this is incredibly horrifying, intriguing, AND heartwarming in the weirdest way (in true star wars fashion!). but also Iâm laughing a little, because, you know that the exact second padme âdiplomacy with a blasterâ amidala figured out what was going on she would be leading every charge. padmeeeee amidalaaaaaaaa!!!!! (but honestly I realllllllly like this idea)
*cackles* b a s i c a l l y.  Though since Padme can still be badly wounded, sheâs going to spend a lot of time either trapped in the Resistance medical facilities and/or fighting with debilitating injuries.
And just wait until word of this development reaches Sidious and/or Vader... [cue fireworks]
@likealeafonthewindâ replied to your post:ok but what if anakin had somehow...
What an interesting idea! And so ironically tragic, because heâs now condemned her to outliving everyone she knows and loves.
ikr? I initially had a tag on that post that said âpadme lives but that doesnât make this a happy storyâ lol. At least Force Ghosts are a thing in the Star Wars universe... that makes the situation ever so slightly easier for her, y/y? (Or harder, depending on your point of view.)
OK, but what if Anakin had somehow managed to fulfill the task he turned to the Dark side for in the first place -- saving Padmeâs life.
The thing is, he doesnât know that it worked, as he was on an operating table at the time and Padme was lightyears away on Polis Massa...
Padme is dead, Obi-Wan thinks, blinking back tears and cradling the infant in his arms.
...She is smaller in death.
It seems impossible that Padme, who had been so full of life, should now lie cold and pale, forever stilled. That she should never again give an impassioned speech or fire a blaster or laugh. That she should never know her children.Â
(That her children should never know her, should never know either of their parents.)
He cannot bear to look at her prone form any longer.
Another dear friend dead, a victim of Vader... a victim of the Sith... Another person I have failed...
But just as he begins to lose himself in his thoughts, he hears a wild beeping from one of the machines.
âWe can not explain it,â the meddroid says, blinking its photoreceptors in surprise. âThis is most irregular. Most irregular.â
What is the droid talking about, what is most --
And then he notices it -- first through the Force, then with his other senses. Somehow... it couldnât be true...
But it was. Padme was alive again.
Padme lives and recovers. She goes into hiding and raises her children. Once the children are a bit older, she assists with the Rebellion... and is shot in its service while on a mission. The blaster wound is fatal; it does not take her long to succumb to its effects. There isnât even enough time for her to say a last goodbye to her children.
Only...
Within the space of ten standard minutes, she is alive again.Â
She still has a bloody -- literally and figuratively -- bullet embedded in her body and she still needs surgery and whatever bacta can be spared... but sheâs alive.
Itâs impossible. (Except how it clearly isnât.) Itâs improbable. (Except for the fact that it keeps happening to her.) And, as she will discover over the coming years, itâs immutable.
Somehow, without knowing what he did or that he had succeeded, Anakin Skywalker found that which the Sith had sought for centuries -- the secret to eternal life.
You see, it isnât that Padme canât die, per se... itâs just that she canât quite seem to remain dead.
For the seven sentences from your fic meme:
She kept a blandly pleasant smile on her face as she made their excuses and steered them away from him.
âWell,â said Obi-Wan once they were out of ke Matillaâs earshot. âThat was interesting.â
ââInterestingâ is one word for it,â Padme said, voice dry as the Dune Sea.
âI am impressed you kept your temper.â
âYears of practice. Besides, Iâve hardly forgotten Grandfatherâs advice so soon.â
âGrandfatherâ, of course, was their code name for Master Yoda, who had warned them to avoid drawing too much attention to themselves.
