The Smell of Summer
Let’s write this post backwards. Kind of. Instead of the usual, words-scent-image train of thought, today I want to start with a photo I love. It’s a Helmut Newton many of you will surely recognize, shot in 1984. It shows a very stylish couple, all in white, standing on a terrace of some old French villa, overlooking Nice in the distance.* She is topless and barefoot, wearing only boxers and a pearl necklace, her hair wet, facing away; he is in a white linen shirt and white pants, wearing sunglasses and reading a local paper.
I am not necessarily wondering what fragrances the two of them might be wearing; she probably just stepped out of the pool, he is wearing Dior Eau Sauvage. It is 1984, after all. No. What I want to know is what the air around them smells like; you can almost inhale the Mediterranean salty breeze just by looking at the photo.
Mind you, I am not a big fan of ozonic/marine scents, all those salty, wet and airy transparencies. Not at all. But one evocative fragrance does stand apart: Profumi del Forte Tirrenico, from 2008. (I know, I know, wrong sea; but there is only one Sea after all, the Mediterranean Sea.) Fragrantica’s beate.geibel wrote: “When I first […] smelled it, I immediately had a clear picture before my eyes, a thought of a very hot summer day on an empty, quiet beach somewhere in Italy or in the South of France. The sun and seawater had dryed out the driftwood, heated up the stones, you can smell the saltwater, a summer wind and the sand. A little further from the beach there is a forest and from there comes a musky tone, a combination of pine trees, wet earth, basil, sandlewood, moss and fennel.”
The Tirrenico product page, under the subtitle Master Perfumer’s Diary Notes, evokes the following: “I breathe in the smells of the sea, pebbles washed by the waves and sand. […] …the smell of seaweed and of the salt lingering on my hands. I will continue with wild herbs from the dunes, with a touch of the citrus fruits from the wonderfully kept gardens of Forte. Just a little bitter orange and jasmine to enrich the middle notes, the perfume that inebriates me as I continue my walk. I will add the fragrance of the sun, those good creams of summer, the thirst-quenching fresh fruits eaten on the beach, wet woods…”
But I like ginger68’s description best, again from Fragrantica: “…it is pure melancholy without sorrow. It doesn’t describe summer vacations, full of sun, mess and loud laughs. It is the sea in autumn. Loneliness, wind, Mediterranean trees, pebbles, rain. It is a whisper of waves.” So there. If you want to smell like the sea - especially the autumn sea - you simply have to try this one.
Top notes: bitter orange, bergamot, resin, salt, sea notes and driftwood.
Middle notes: fruity notes, basil, jasmine, elemi resin and fennel.
Base notes: sandalwood, oakmoss and musk.
