Lynnhaven River Now, a local environmental group, has received a $200,000 federal grant to build an oyster reef out of crushed concrete. Oyster shells, the traditional material for building reefs, have been in short supply for years because of dwindling harvests. Young oysters need a hard surface to attach, and concrete has proved a promising alternative.
