Like "oh yeah, of course everything's gonna be just fine once there's a vaccine in a year or two âşď¸âşď¸" two years of "non-essential" population being unable to earn or spend money to any significant degree will be devastating to the economy and normal way of life even in countries which take the most robust stance to support laid off/furloughed/unused hourly/gig workers. Two years of not being able to leave the goddamn motherfucking house for anything but groceries is going to utterly ream a lot of people's mental health. Two years of having to resist the temptation to play Nintendo all day and do all classes online is going to get all but the most motivated and intuitive kids severely behind in their education. There's aspects to this that even the most caring, constituent-oriented, and careful politicians can't solve. This isn't about them. This is about, don't go acting like everything will instantly be fine, dandy and back . ... to normal the moment we have a vaccine or other solution for this if it doesn't come in a matter of weeks.          Â
My dude, how you managed the olympic level reach from âowlet tells an anon that she doesnât know when we can go outside again, but eventually we willâ to âowlet said everything will go right back to normalâ is freaking beyond me. I never said any of that. I said that people are working on it. They are. I said that the supportive measures for it are not up to scientists but to politicians. They are. If you wish to rant about the unfairness of the world, go elsewhere than me blog. I work fulltime in a hospital lab. Donât fucking tell me about the toll this is going to take on people.
Nobody can tell how long this will go, or how many things will change. The goal of quarantines isnât to lock everyone up until the virus is starved out. The goal is to slow down spread. Should we discover that population immunity levels from subclinical infections are high, itâs entirely possible that things will be relaxed more, much sooner. But we donât know. We wonât for a while. Having a panic attack about how things might be in two years, when we donât know how theyâll be in two months is counterproductive for everyone, yourself included.
