A clock is a prominent setpiece in the Nutcracker ballet. When the clock strikes midnight, clara shrinks, setting off the scariest music and scene in the ballet.

When Clara shrinks, her toymaker uncle Drosselmeyer is perched atop the clock, casting frightening shadows. Drosselmeyer is a creepy character in the ballet as well, and his appearance from shadows and ability to alter time is a trait shared with the Princess Tutu Drosselmeyer. The ballet Drosselmeyer is often outfitted with an eye patch and dramatic cape, which is most likely the reason PT Dross has crazy eyes and cape swoosh in the opening.

Owls are frequently associated with ominous, threatening, or magical characters in ballet, due to their association with bad omens.

Drosselmeyer’s clock in Princess Tutu also bears resemblance to a coffin. That’s more relevant to Princess Tutu’s Drosselmeyer than the plot of the ballet.
