The Ouya: right idea, wrong time
Ok, so hear me out. It’s 2013, and after a VERY successful kickstarter, the Ouya is released, a low cost, low powered console with a focus on accessibility both for gamers and developers. Unfortunately, it tanks, and support for the console stops in 2015. Think about the culture around games at that time, massive triple AAA game releases with a strong focus (as always) on visuals (BF3, Star Wars Battlefront, etc); not conducive towards the Ouya.
Fast forward to now, games consoles are massively expensive, with minimal difference in performance between brands, and diminishing returns in terms of graphical fidelity. Moreover, the shift has gone from one time transactions towards micro transactions and “seasons”. And it’s clear to see how unhealthy current working conditions are for those making these games.
In this climate, with people struggling so much with their Mental Health and financially, this just isn’t sustainable. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that cosy games like Animal Crossing became so popular in lockdown. Shorter, non linear experiences that are focused on comfort, on the feeling, on story. Not graphical fidelity.
In this environment, now, I think a console like the Ouya would probably thrive! Low cost, focused on accessibility and small, cozy experiences. I think websites like itch.io now fill this niche to a degree, but I’d love to see something like it in a console format - an even more accessible option to those without the option of purchasing a computer or laptop.
