My grandmother died last year. Last week, I mentioned her in passing and an acquaintance said they were sorry. That seemed odd to me. I don’t know how to respond to a thing like that. Eventually I said what my dad learned to say — ‘it was sudden, but not unexpected.’ She was sick for years. Some of those years were alright, even, and I don’t think there’s a better way for a thing to happen than that. Sudden and unexpected is bad; slow and unexpected is worse. Slow and expected isn’t worth talking about. Fast and foreseen is called graceful. I wish everything went down that way.
Center for Biological Diversity: Tiehm’s Buckwheat, Under Review for Federal Protection, Loses up to 40% of Population
Not lost, destroyed. 40% of the total population of Tiehm’s buckwheat, which almost but doesn’t quite have federal protection, was dug up, mangled, and partially hauled away. Almost overnight.
This coincides with a plan by the Australian Ioneer Corp. to establish an open-pit lithium mine on the site. The same Ioneer Corp. responsible for $5,000 ‘missing poster’ bounties on discovery of new subpopulations, and who benefits from the federal government’s chronic mismanagement of this and other species.

There is no meaning inherent in past or present material signs; there is only the capacity for meaning. Meaning is the temporally dependent emergent property of material engagement, the ongoing blending between the mental and the physical. In the case of material signs, we do not read meaningful symbols; we meaningfully engage meaningless symbols. Material signs have no meaning in themselves; they merely afford the possibility of meaning, as a door affords the possibility of being opened.
In real life, to interpret a material sign is not to provide a verbal substitute for it; rather, it is to become habituated with the interactive possibilities and consequences of its performance in context without bothering about exegetical questions. Material signs do not represent: they enact. They do not stand for reality; they bring forth reality. As long as archaeology fails to recognize that, it will remain a prisoner of its Cartesian genealogy, endlessly protesting with no real chance of escaping.
