The market for academia is poor enough right now that it isnât worth it to me to risk pursuing it. The idea of spending 7 more years in school only to be forced to move to Nebraska or somewhere equally depressing because I canât get hired anywhere else is more than enough to put me off, especially because being enrolled in a PhD program has the potential to totally soul crushing. The cost is also a factor; I attend a very expensive university as is, and it strikes me as unwise to enter graduate school with the debt that I already have.
