More people should really at least consider otherlinking to be a thing they themselves can do. The community is quiet and the tags tend to be overrun with crossposting, but I think it'd be a lot louder if people actually considered it as a genuine possibility a little more often. 'Linking is usually seen as an afterthought you tack onto the end of a list of alterhuman terms and not usually discussed too much more than that from what we can see. Which is sad because it really can be beneficial and it absolutely has a place in the broader alterhuman community.
You really want to be an animal, or your favourite character, but you know you're not? You can do that--you can just.. become them.
You have a hearttype but it feels kinda weird and it feels like you should have been that thing, but you're not? You could always 'link it if you're dysphoric about not being that thing.
You have something that was--or you thought was--a kintype, but now it's not, and you miss it? Just link it back into yourself.
You think [thing] is really cool and it'd be cool to be one? You can!
You want to incorporate an aesthetic of [thing] into your identity and it'd work best if you just became that thing? That's absolutely a thing you can do.
You think it'd be fun to identify as something other than what your body is? You can make that happen.
Being [thing] would help with something in your life? Go ahead, you can do that.
You can mold your own sense of self an identity however you see fit, and that's really cool. Honestly it comes across as a power move. You get to make your own self, no matter what came before it.
maybe internalized alterhumisia but i dont feel as valid because im otherlink and not otherkin, i kinda feel like a poser sometimes.
This is internalized alterhumisia.
You are valid anon, you belong in the community.
"I want to 'link, but I'm not sure what to choose as a linktype"
[PT: "I want to 'link, but I'm not sure what to choose as a linktype" /PT end]
You want to 'link, but you're not sure what to choose? Here's some questions and suggestions, that maybe will help you.
Do you have an animal/a character/an object/a concept/etc. that you feel connected with in some way? If you feel a connection to something, maybe try 'linking this.
What's your reason for 'linking? E.g. if you wanna become more brave, try 'linking something that you associate with being brave (e.g. a lion), or a character that is brave in their source. Or maybe if you wanna 'link in order to cope with something, you can look for characters that went through similar experiences as you and found a way to cope, and you could 'link them.
If you have any other alterhuman identity already, maybe you could 'link something related to that. E.g. If you're an otherflicker and miss some of your 'flickers or want to make them permanent, you could 'link them! If you have a hearthome, you could 'link something related to it (e.g. if any species/characters live in the place that's your hearthome, you could 'link them).
Did you want to be a specific animal/character/object/concept/etc. when you were younger? Maybe you could 'link that, if you still feel some connection to that!
Or maybe there were characters or animals that you used to roleplay as? You could 'link them, too!
Interact with some media, and maybe you'll find some ideas for linktypes.
You can also read some encyclopedias. Maybe they will give you some ideas for a linktype. And even if after reading you wouldn't get any ideas, you still would have learnt something new!
Look around. Maybe at your home, or somewhere in your area, there's something that you could 'link!
You can read about experiences of other otherlinkers to learn about what made them choose their linktypes.
These are only a few ideas. I hope these will help somebody! If you have your own ideas or suggestions, feel free to share them in the reblogs! And if you already chose a linktype/linktypes, feel free to share what made you choose them.
Also, for everyone interested in 'linking, don't feel afraid to experiment with your identity. Don't feel afraid to drop and change linktypes. There's nothing wrong with dropping and changing linktypes. If you feel like you don't need a linktype anymore, or the linktype is bringing you harm, drop it or change it. If there's anything that you think would be a better linktype for you than your current linktype, feel free to change it!
Me if I was a plushie

what if i identity as something nonhuman and its kind of a choice but kind of not a choice. what then
Otherlinks ARE alterhuman. They are as much as alterhuman as any other alterhuman.
"They don't have shifts" And many alterhumans don't have shifts too. And also they CAN have shifts. I have them and I'm an otherlink + my first ever alterhuman identity WAS otherlink.
Also, you're putting down every alterhuman who doesn't experience shifts. Remember, alterhumanity is laying outside of identity norms to say the least. Many alterhumans identify with/as something (ex. nonhuman animals, mythical creatures, ocs, fictional characters, objects, concepts, plants, and much more.) but that isn't the requirement to be alterhuman.
