there's
a reason I love ffxi and ffxiv both in the way that i do
i am fairly emotional at the moment, and as one does, i put my thoughts into words about it. so here you go
ffxi has been part of my life since
since i was less than 10
i didn't play it. my dad played it
and from then on, ever after, i'd ask him to tell me his stories- and he would.
tales of his adventures and derring-do
how he was one of very few paladins who could hold hate through a WHM's two-hour cooldown, without using his own
tales of how he showed up to a party in fishing gear and tanked until someone asked "so if you're doing this good, uh, how well do you tank in normal gear?"
tales of fearsome foes and the friends he made along the way, and of the frustrations of linkpearl drama
he would tell me these stories- tell me all of these incredibly complex facets of this game he loved too much to keep playing
and then i started playing ffxiv when i was 15. the two of us began to both have these stories, these moments of our individual heroics, the people we've met along the way.
so that's a lot of how we bond, even now.
and when DT came out, when I wanted to get invested in the Alliance Raids
I started playing XI
and I found that all the magic is still there
the lights are still on
there's still nothing like it.
and my father, once a storyteller, then a tale trader, has become my mentor
i love eorzea
but vana'diel came first.
i love eorzea more than i love vana'diel
but i cannot overstate how high that bar is.
i have met so many people
made so many fleeting friends, passing in and out of my life
had heartfelt, deeply personal chats with people I had never spoken to before and may never speak to again.
there's magic in games like this
the magic is you
