Disclaimer: while I'll do my best to stick to lore, this post may include interpretation. Also I am aware that Osana has evoked strong emotions in certain Mara Sov circles, so while you're free to argue whether she is an abusive / negligent parent or simply an overstretched one, do not do so on my post. Thank you!

for @crispy0nion
Osana Sov is the mother [and presently, only named parent] of Mara and Uldwyn/Uldren Sov. She enlisted in Project Amrita at Mara's request and was presumably an Auturge (volunteer) like her daughter. Once Awoken, she runs a ranch in the Distributary and stays behind because of it.
Osana is a complicated woman, both loved and resented by her 2 children. Uldwyn cared about her concerns but as Uldren, found them stifling. Mara "never considered her a mother," but loves her and built a statue in remembrance. While on the Yang Liwei, she berated Mara for engaging in dangerous activities (Mara saw her as critical in general); but in the Distributary, she came to Mara's aid during the Theodicy War. Osana and Mara's relationship particularly revolves around independence and power over others [2].
Generally, Osana was known for her negotiation skills and gift of foresight. She is allegedly alive (since Awoken in the Distributary are immortal), but it is unknown if she had more children since Mara and Uldren left.

having many thoughts about how as a 19 year old human mara had suicidal or at least self harming tendencies and her mother KNEW this, and instead of helping her in any way osana just got mad at her for setting a bad example for uldren…
With the new discussion about Osana, I’m reminded that we still don’t know who Mara and Uldren’s other parent is and haunted by my SO’s joke that it’s Savathun.

anyway I’ve had this idea rattling around in my brain cavity for 3 days now and I finally have the time/motiviation to write it! And this is like... REALLY short, but it’s something. And something is better than nothing.
Summary: A young Mara gets in trouble. Osana learns why.
“Ah, Osana, thank you for coming so… timely. I’m afraid Mara got into a scrap again.”
Osana tightened her lips and sighed. She shouldn’t have expected anything more. Nonetheless, she nodded respectfully to the principal.
“Thank you for taking time out of your day for yet another conversation.”
Osana followed the principal down the long hallways of the school, eventually turning into a small room with the school counselor standing in the middle.
On one side, a child tall enough that Osana suspected he must be at least a grade above Mara. His face was red and he was blubbering like a toddler, his nose red and his shirt stained with a few drops of blood.
On the other side, Mara. She scowled, her face turned away from both the counselor and the boy, though her face reddened when her mother came in.
“Mara,” The principal said. “Would you like to explain what happened to your mother?”
She turned her head further, remaining silent. Osana sighed.
The principal shook her head. “Your daughter physically assaulted Tyrone-” She gestured to the boy. “During their free time between classes today.”
Osana tilted her head. “Why?”
“As far as I can tell, no reason. She’s refused to speak.”
In the corner, Mara muttered something.
Osana rubbed the bridge of her nose. “I’m terribly sorry. I’ll talk with her today once we’re in private-”
“I’m afraid she’s also suspended.”
Osana sucked in a breath.
“It’s the third time in two months,” The principal said calmly. “She’s showing aggressive behavior. Either send your daughter to another school or send her to a therapist. We do not tolerate this kind of behavior.”
With grit teeth, Osana nodded. “I will. Thank you for you time.”
Mara stood and walked over to her mother. Behind her back, the boy made a rude gesture, and the counselor chided him as they walked out.
“I don’t understand what phase this is Mara,” Osana hissed. “But it must stop.”
Mara remained silent.
“And I don’t even want to be mad at you,” Osana continued. “You asked me to treat you like an adult, that you didn’t want to be a daughter but rather a friend, and by God I’ve been trying. But if you continue to test the limits like this I won’t.”
“He’s bullying Uldwyn.”
Osana stopped, turning on her heels to look at her daughter. “What?”
Mara glanced up, her jaw tightened. “He’s been mocking Uldwyn for months now. He’s called him a bastard, a pussy, and taunts him relentlessly any chance he gets. Uldren has been hiding it from you because he doesn’t want you to worry.”
Osana shook her head in disbelief. “If he wouldn’t tell his mother, how would you know?”
Mara turned away again. “He’s an easy person to read. And it’s hard to hide things from your fraternal twin.”
Osana sighed and continued to walk.
“Violence isn’t the answer you know.”
Mara’s nostrils flared. “I wish it wasn’t. But Roger doesn’t understand that.”
“Roger?”
“He wants people to call him Tyrone because he thinks it sounds cooler. No one else knows except for me. I’m this close to telling the whole school.”
“Mara,” Osana sighed. “You must understand that knowledge is power.”
“Oh, I know. I just don’t care when I use it.”
For a moment, Osana worries for her daughter. Then she remembers that she is nothing but a 13-year-old with plenty of time to learn.
“There will be a punishment,” Osana said. “Especially considering you got suspended this time around. But… do talk to Uldwyn, okay? I want to speak with him about these bullies of his.”
“They’ll still taunt him. If anything, your interference will just be more ammunition.”
