So when Orpheus puts his head in Jocelyn’s lap, he’s doing something far more intimate than any confession he could give her honestly. My boy is choosing rest in her presence. Letting his guard down. Ughhh it makes me melt!

While our dear Jocie’s affection is visible, Orpheus is showing he’s soft for her by the simple fact that he doesn’t shrug her off. He’s giving her permission to be her authentic self. Her clinginess, something that would irritate him from anyone else, except maybe Garreth, is something he allows because it calms the part of her that fears being abandoned and rejected. And it calms something in him, too, but don’t expect him to dwell on that part for too long.

Moving on!

The best part of their dynamic is that Jocelyn can draw out the small boy underneath the stoic man…the part that knows how to tease, to indulge, to kiss someone just to make them smile. Orpheus doesn’t do these light soft things as a default, but as a gift. With everyone else, he’s stoic, unreadable and gives the air of sleepy and bored. With Jocelyn however, he has moments where he is shockingly tender for no reason other than to make her happy.

I’ve got one word for you, Devotion! You’ll find Orpheus holding Jocelyn close and showing his reverence without having to say a single thing out loud. His hands are tools. With Jocelyn, they are careful. He holds her like she’s fragile, especially when she’s spiraling or bracing for rejection. He treats her as the most precious thing, because she is.

What if his mother had lived?

Throwing in heavy questions I see. Well let’s get to it.

We wouldn’t get the stoic, closed-off boy who has retreated into himself. We’d get Orpheus as he was meant to be, mischievous, quick to smile, undeniably charming at all times.

He’d still be brilliant with sleight of hand making a sickle vanish and reappear behind your ear. But I suppose most importantly he would be without that defining wound that his mother’s death left, he wouldn’t need to become morally grey to feel safe. He wouldn’t be nearly as self-serving because that powerlessness that he felt is no longer there. He wouldn’t chase control. His fear of powerlessness, of being helpless, wouldn’t drive his every future decision. He’d still be clever, and occasionally intense, but he’s nearly always have a grin plastered to his face.

I like to think that if Lorna had lived, if they ran before that mob of men came, that the Gullah people would help get them out. The community would have aided her and convinced her to return to her ancestral home, to her brother. Not because they wouldn’t want them there, but villages look after their own you know. So if they did flee to Scotland, Orpheus would still arrive at Hogwarts as the mysterious new fifth year. Just… without the heavy baggage. Gosh I feel mean for making his life like this, but do I love an angsty tragic past! Anyway, I suppose the difference here is simple… my canon Orpheus is just surviving while the version this AU creates actually lives happily.

What if his father was never a stinkbrain to begin with.

Like….Durand Beaumont isn’t cruel. He isn’t suspicious. He isn’t a walking red flag. He actually loves Lorna, respects her. He chooses her despite her looks and with no scorn for her blood status. Where he doesn’t jump to conclusions and harm his son?

In that case, Durand would never leave Scotland with Lorna. He would stay, wear the label of blood traitor for her. He’d take the Kerr name for good measure. And sweet Lorna wouldn’t be the tucked-away as the scorned bride but would be Durand’s wife in full daylight. She’d have a life close to her brother, a different village to raise her boy.

And Orpheus would actually be cherished by his father. He would look at him born with the Kerr eyes and hair, and never once say he isn’t his. No suspicion. No violence. Just a father happy to have a healthy son. He’d be raised by two parents who are deeply in love and present.

He’d grow up with a real father figure to guide him, someone steady, untainted. There would be no scar. No southern accent. No trauma shaping him into the morally grey boy we know. He’d arrive at Hogwarts at eleven as a happy, eager kid with bright eyes, far too much charm for his own good and he would definitely be a menace. But a menace that would write home to his parents often, and get to live in a happier version of reality.

I’m sure we can both agree Orphelyn is a couple ppl know not to mess with (for good reason). But in an actual fight, how do you see them working together as a battle couple? (Love a good battle couple >:3)

If it helps in ur response, Jocie’s fighting style is primarily offensive, as she’s most focused on dispatching the threat asap. She can appear impulsive, but rly what’s happening is she assesses the threat quickly and tries to give the quickest possible reaction before it can strike. She doesn’t think too far ahead, but she does consider what matters in the here and now; and acts on it. She’s quick on her feet and in her reaction times. Her primary weakness is that she forgets to play defensive; taking one too many hits before she realizes she actually needs to heal if she wants to keep fighting

Such a fun question!! Let’s get to it!!

Orphelyn is absolutely a “don’t start none, won’t be none” couple, well unless Jocie has the full reigns, and then it’s a free for all hahaha. But if you do start something? They’re a nightmare together because they don’t overlap or get in each other’s way, they stack….bodies haha…but really.

Orpheus fights like Sherlock Holmes with a mean streak and swamp-bred instincts hahaha. He’s watching feet, wand hands, breathing patterns, spacing. He’s deducing weaknesses and outcomes in real time. Offensively he’s precise, defensively he’s suffocating. He isn’t fighting to trade spells but to control the field until the other person panics and hands him the win.

And then you add the American Lowcountry upbringing? Girl!! That’s not “refined duelist,” that’s “I’ve fought gators with these bare hands” energy.

If you’ve wrestled gators and dugbogs and yanked tongues for fun, you learn a very specific style where you don’t go toe-to-toe like a gentleman. You’re taking something away, like balance, mobility, breath, confidence. It’s leverage, stamina, and dirty patience. Orpheus isn’t just smart, he’s hard to shake. He can outlast you, outthink you, and physically keep going long after you start making sloppy mistakes (sorry dear Ruby, I’m living in the gutter today hahaha).

Since Jocie forgets the defense, that’s where Orpheus makes them terrifying as a battle couple.

He becomes the defense she forgets to be.

He doesn’t slow her down, he just aims her. He positions them so Jocelyn never gets swarmed. He cuts off escape routes so the opponent can’t kite her. He watches her blindside and interrupts attacks she doesn’t see coming. It’s like he’s quietly herding the fight into a shape that suits her, and then letting her do what she does best, dispatch them as quick as possible. And when Jocelyn starts overcommitting he simply moves her. He steps into her flank. He drags her back a touch. He throws up a shield at the exact moment she would’ve eaten a hit.

I like to think that they also escalate emotionally in the scariest way in a fight. Jocelyn by getting faster when Orpheus is threatened. Orpheus by getting quieter when Jocelyn is hurt, and that’s when he’s at his most dangerous. If someone were to tag her too hard, he’d stop playing defensive and start playing lethal swamp predator closing the distance, breaking the rhythm, and removing options, leading the opponent to the inevitable outcome.

So yeah…they’d work really well….I’d rather not cross them honestly.

Let’s say Jocie did somehow survive? What kind’ve dad would Orpheus be? (We both know Jocie would be the doting, overprotective, hyper-affectionate mother who babies and spoils the kids😅)

The other Jocie survived au: after school the two split off to go the wit separate ways. He becomes the new leader of the Ashwinders and she becomes an aurpr: the very one who was apparently assigned to track him down and bring him in. How do you see this going? :3

Ok back to canon where she doesn’t survive- I know you answered this before but I’m curious as to how he personally handles her loss on na emotional level? How does he cope? Does the poor boy finally get the therapy he needs?😭💔 gold tell me he’s able to heal eventually😢)

Last q completely unrelated to the others lmao: one tiny quirk he likes about her? We know she loves his annoyed jaw twitch haha😂 (she’s very annoying about it, to pokes his face whenever she sees it🤣)

My Dear Ruby, let us rot together!

1. Oh ho ho! Daddy Orpheus! Orpheus would be the steady grounded dad who loves his children wholeheartedly, which is funny for a man who doesn’t do love. This has me giggling in the car line thinking about it. Having never known his own father, he would probably feel vastly unprepared at first. I mean what man is ever ready. But you would find that he is the dad who pretends he’s unmoved while his kid proudly shoves a silly drawing into his hands, like a stick figure family or a silly made up creature, and then that drawing ends up framed like a priceless work of art. The funniest part for this would be that if something happened, like a scrape, bad dream, etc, Jocelyn would be like….my babies, my angels, my precious. While Orpheus would be the one saying that they’re fine while lifting the kid onto his hip and letting them tuck their face into his neck. He’d definitely be protective, tender and sentimental. 100% Daddy material!

2. An Auror au!!

Let’s see… so Jocie and Orpheus split after school and rebuild themselves, obviously on opposite sides of the law where he rises to become the new leader of the Ashwinders, and she becomes an Auror. In a sick twist of fate or a ministry trick to draw Orpheus out, Jocie is assigned the case meant to track him down and bring him in. What think would follow would be a poisonous game of cat and mouse where Jocie is always a step behind and Orpheus is always heartbeat too close but stays achingly out of reach, controlling what she finds and when, while Jocie uses everything she knows about him to tighten the net to trap him. Until she realizes the net is tightening around her too. Lovers become exes, exes become enemies, and poor Jocie realizes Orpheus’ charm still works on her. Every near-capture turns into a conversation that cuts deeper than any blade, every victory costs them something, and the case stops being about justice versus crime and becomes about who gets to decide what happens to the person they can’t stop wanting. Oh I do so love enemies to lovers!

3. He dissociates at first, slipping into a numb, unreal kind of calm where he can still move and speak and function, but it all feels like he’s watching his life from a few steps away. Grief hits in lurches, sharp and unpredictable. Denial and anger come strongest, because denial is the only thing that lets him breathe and anger is the only thing that makes him feel solid. There isn’t much bargaining, so instead he clings to routines and small, stupid habits. It takes him a long time to accept that she is truly gone, and when it finally hits, it doesn’t feel like closure, it feels like something inside him collapses. Her absence becomes a constant, gaping hollow he keeps reaching for without thinking, the way you reach for a hand that used to be there. And we know she was always there. He walks around like a shell of himself, present but unreachable, carrying the weight of what he couldn’t save. If there’s any therapy it comes in the form of his friends, Garreth most of all, stubbornly showing up, filling the silence with warmth, making sure he eats, making sure he sleeps, making sure he doesn’t disappear into the dark parts of his own mind. And does he ever heal? Not in the way people like to promise when you lose someone so special. He will always ache for the love he lost. But the ache changes over time, less like an open wound and more like a scar that still throbs when pressed. A part of him will always be missing her.

4. Thank you for a light question after the heavy! Anyway! Orpheus adores the way Jocelyn’s eyes sparkle at the littlest thing. Almost like the world is handing her small miracles. So many things make them brighten and shine! A stupid joke, Orpheus, a new book, Orpheus, sunlight hitting glass, Orpheus, a stray cat choosing her lap… I think you get the just of it.

It gets him because it’s so honest and unabashedly her. To him Jocelyn’s eyes always betray her, wide and alive and shining like she’s in a constant state of delight, even when hyper focused. He adores it so much that he will feel his mouth soften before he can stop it, and much like with the same resigned fondness he gets when she pokes his jaw when it’s twitching. He thinks she’s impossible in the most endearing way. This is why he can’t win if she whips out those puppy dog eyes. When she pouts poor boy is a goner, his will crumbling beneath her gaze!

A yandere Orpheus… with that carefully curated stoic personality…the emotional unavailability…well… I’ve had 3 hours of sleep and a strong cup of coffee, so let’s GO! And honestly I don’t even think with my musings you would even call this yandere, but let’s get to it! @creampuffcloudsdreaming correct me on the Jocie bits if I’m wrong!!

I suppose it wouldn’t look like the usual theatrics you would expect from a yandere. And Orpheus would definitely only be like this for Jocelyn. He wouldn’t suddenly start snarling at potential rivals in corridors, clinging in public, or making grand declarations. He’s too controlled and deliberate for that. His intensity has never been loud, it’s like a constant finality. A yandere Orpheus wouldn’t transform into someone new, he would just allow Jocelyn to become the single exception and be come wholly and quietly obsessed.

He would still have his restraint and would watch Jocelyn patiently, almost clinically, like collecting data. Not because she is simply interesting but because she is important. She would be the sun and he would be fixed in her orbit, never deviating, never shifting. He wouldn’t chase, nor would he beg.

The yandere elements of possession, obsession, exclusivity, fear of loss would filter through his stoicism and become something deceptively calm. Orpheus wouldn’t panic at the thought of abandonment like Jocelyn. Jocelyn fears being left while Orpheus fears being powerless. That distinction matters, because it changes how he would respond. Jocelyn would spiral outward, loud, impulsive, pleading, furious. Orpheus’ spiral would be inward. He would become colder, sharper, more efficient. More fully focused on his light. If he senses the relationship threatened, he’d simply start removing variables. Let’s not forget, he came to Hogwarts with blood already on his hands. I fear for anyone who he feels truly threatened by.

Anyway a stoic yandere Orpheus wouldn’t experience his possessiveness as ugliness….is that even the right word… anyway. He would see it as a responsibility. He already learned that loving someone can break you. So once he’s in Jocelyn’s orbit, he would respond the way any traumatized strategist responds to any threat. He’d secure the asset. Is it cold, maybe, but it could look painfully tender. Orpheus would be consistent and ever present. He’d be the quiet shadow at her shoulder. He’d have no need to tell her she’s safe. He’d make it so. He wouldn’t shower her with compliments, but he’d do the far more dangerous thing. He’d give her access to his routines, his silence, his space, his peace. He’d let her touch him without flinching, relishing the contact. He’d let her claim him in anyway she wants, reassuring them both. It’d be proof that she’s real, here, still his, not slipping away. Does that even make sense? Anyway moving on!

Orpheus isn’t particularly verbose, unless he’s writing, so his language would keep the same restraint, but it would sharpen. He wouldn’t spiral and say, “You’re mine” every five minutes. He’d say it once exactly when it matters and it will land like a chokehold . He lives in denial of his jealousy and if he were truly yandere he wouldn’t show it. I do think he would however relocate Jocelyn in possessive ways. Like a hand at her waist, fingers at her elbow, a polite step that places her behind him or beside him, shifting her away and placing focus on him and communicating his ownership.

He would definitely indulge his feelings since they serve a purpose. Jocelyn being that purpose. Obsessive much! He would study her tells(not that he hasn’t done that already). What makes her brighten, makes her tremble, what forces her to spiral. This is where the yandere undertone would become a little frightening. He would be very good at regulating her. How to quickly calm her panic at abandonment with a touch, a phrase, a plan. Using what makes her feel chosen. Not in a malicious way, and not to toy with her, but as a form of control. He would shape the relationship in a way that wouldn’t slip from his hands.

And Jocelyn, per Ruby, who began as the truly yandere obsessive one, would find herself both thrilled and intimidated. How could she not honestly. She would most likely feel triumphant that Orpheus matches her intensity, choosing her back. But then she’d notice the difference in flavor. Where she is bright, emotional, messy, loud enough to be seen. His is quiet enough to pass as normal. She can throw a tantrum and everyone can call it childish, cause she is. Orpheus can make a rival disappear from Jocelyn’s orbit without anyone ever blaming him. He can soothe her with one sentence and make her feel ashamed for ever doubting him. He can love her in a way that feels like safety, at least until she realizes safety and captivity can share a border. He wouldn’t be trying to hurt her of course, he isn’t a sadist. He’d be fighting the universe, keeping it from taking another person he’s attached to, not that he isn’t doing that anyway as his emotionally unavailable stoic self. Once he’s fully committed, that’s when he’d be dangerous, because to him, losing Jocelyn is failure and powerlessness. It’s history repeating itself. So he’d become the storm before the storm can reach her, just in a more possessive and obsessive fashion.
